How does the Guv get away with this every time?

Okay, so I'm reading the reviews for AVB and every third post said something like, "Armin was great, played so many good tracks but it was too crowded."

Let see, Stereo gets busted in Montreal and 400 ppl get turned back from Bal en Blanc due to fire marshalls turning up after the NYE Resolution overcrowding.. yet the Guv consistently overcrowds every headliner weekend, regardless of the obvious fire hazard.. not to mention the massive buzzkill it is for many. I've been ranting about this for months () but no one seems to do anything about it (ie complaining to managment, or, more drastically, tipping off the cops). Btw, I've been to the Guv so I know what I'm talking about.

Bribes.

yeah, that's what I alluded to before in another thread. Could be meth donuts or something too.

overcrowding + sketch = disaster. I noticed there were potential fights too, something you'd almost never expect in Plurland Totaville

Posted by exstasie on Apr-22-2007 17:26:

Overall...i don't htink it was that overally packed...like there were quite a few pockets in the back in some places where there was tons of room!

It's just that everyone wants to get up close and moves through the crowd and pushing and shoving and that kind of crap.

Yesterday was definitely not as packed as I've seen in the past.

And yes...Bribes...I've seen cops who are the front receive envelopes or packages from asian ppl before being let in to guv...

Posted by Spin Laden on Apr-22-2007 17:28:

I dunno about you but who wants to pay $50 to be stuck in a corner of a club?

If you actually saw this happen these have to be rookie/n00b cops taking the payoffs. A seasoned veteran would never let anyone see him taking a payoff, way too much at stake. At least that's what I think.

Posted by Spin Laden on Apr-22-2007 17:35:

All it takes is one fire or something and so much shit would hit the fan, so many ppl would be implicated in this. There's other clubs in TO that do the same too *cough* Republik *cough*

Posted by musicsnob_NOT on Apr-22-2007 17:39:

I got there last night around 2:45 and left by 3:30. It was exactly what I expected, very crowded, very pushy, very hot. I just wasn't in the mood to deal with it last night so I left and I am not complaining about the situation. Anyone who has ever been to Guv on a big party night knows this is what it is going to be like. Don't get mad, act shocked, complain about it because you knew it was going to be like that.

Everything you mentioned about Stereo has only happened in the last month and has a lot to do with the new fire chief. I have been to Stereo and have seen it just as packed as Guv. BEB a couple weeks back was no different than Guv last night.

It is what it is at The Guvernment. Know that going into any event and decide if you want to deal with it.

Posted by I_Am_Vince on Apr-22-2007 17:41:

Yesterday wasn't really overcrowded, only at the front by the DJ booth, the back and the sides where the couches are had plenty of space. But I do know what you're talking about when you meant overcrowded (above & beyond, NYE, etc.) Let's hope the new Guvernment added more room, or something.

Posted by Spin Laden on Apr-22-2007 17:42:

see, that's the thing. Do you really have to expect that? As ticket buyers, you guys have more say than you think. All it takes is a phone call to the right authorities or a letter to the Toronto Star

Posted by devnull on Apr-22-2007 17:47:

perhaps we need bigger rooms to handle big headliners!! like merge KH and Guv. lol

If it was so easy, someone would've done it already, there's probably more behind the scenes that we don't know about.

Yes I do expect that. Every single club anywhere will overcrowd if given the chance.

I do agree that a phone call to the right person who has their own agenda could change some things, but it will only be temporary. I personally would prefer if they charged a lot more for tickets and limited capacity (because I can afford to pay more) but you only have to look at the Decadence or this event thread and you have a lot of people already complaining about the price.

Nah.

I think ppl grumble for a few days but aren't proactive enough. I betcha a simple complaint to the paper, for example, would shape up things and then you guys would have even better memories of the night.

Being able to find your friends, move around freely, dance to the vibe, go to the bathroom whenever and to keep your shoes clean, your sanity clear is nothing no amount of pills can change

As someone who had a store right beside The Docks (until Sprackman bought the entire building and doubled our rent) I can tell you that you are correct. What he was able to get done and changed (from getting street parking one year to getting rid of it when he got his own parking lot) doesn't just happen without some political help. It was also quite the intersting cast of people who would be in and out of the club during the week. This is how business is done and it is how business will always be done in any City, not just Toronto. You scratch my nut, I'll scratch yours.

I thought of that.. I'm sure the Guv could still generate decent numbers with some creative pricing. Tix would prolly go up a bit, but ppl wouldn't balk en masse if it were to increase say, $5. And with less overcrowding, you may even increase drink sales too. Who knows? Ppl bitch about the tickets, yes, yet they consistently pay for a bittersweet night (good music but pushy crowd).

nothing has more political clout than raising this issue to a wider audience (ie Toronto Star or something).

Yeah great alert the "authorities" about something that you think is a problem. Do you realize that city hall is just looking for any excuse to SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE CLUB SCENE?

So go ahead, help them out and put a lot of people out of work and limit your choices in lifestyles.

Some people are really fucking retarded... Honest to god..

PS: if you think clubs here are crowded i suggest NEVER going to places like Miami, Ibiza, London or just about anywhere else that has a real club scene.

Fucking babies

if this was just an issue of personal comfort i would have to agree with you. being a fire hazard, i would have to disagree.

really, all i want is big fucking garage-like doors all through the club, so if there was a fire, there wouldn't be crazy bottle-necking at the door

and the clubs in Ibiza weren't bad, with the exception of Pacha, which is a disaster in the making.

Posted by Jayx1 on Apr-22-2007 18:25:

i wouldnt call it a fire hazard... there are a lot of fire exits at clubs in toronto. Obviously if it were a fire hazard it wouldnt be allowed to happen. Do you know how unbelievably regulated licenced establishments are and how crazy the enforcement is?

Seriously what i read here is A LOT of ignorance and it really makes me angry. Go to the star, go to the mayor because we all know that they always speak the truth and dont over exaggerate for their own causes right?

Give me a break....

Have we not learned from that already??

Fucking sheep

I've been to London and just because one place kills your vibe and overcrowds means you have to be subjected to the same abuse too? Nice "sheep like" mentality, Mr Tota "Prime Minister" (smirk). And I disagree with the SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE CLUB SCENE blanket statement, because in actual fact, almost every tourist guide makes reference to TO's nightlife, which, incidentaly, generates much needed revenue for the city.

Believe me, the Guv and TO's police force (if they are implicated in all this, somehow) would deeply want to avoid the worse case scenario big time if that were to happen:

You dont think that the city isnt trying to shut down the club scene?

hahahahaha seriously?

Ok your level of ignorance is astounding thats all i can say. ... and sheep i am not... people around here can tell you that im anything but!

BTW id seriously limit what you have to say about certain clubs and the police because otherwise the only person reported will be you for libel... and it has happened many times on the net in the past...

It wont be me doing the reporting but i can assure you that a lot more people than you think actually read these threads..

so id be shutting up right about now

no, sheep you are not.

do you think that if someone was on the stairs in the guv main room, and a fire broke out, that they would have a reasonable expectation to get out alive?

on one of the big events that we had to do this one direction thing it took me over 45 mins to get from guv floor to the drink doors. it was so crowded that someone managed to get a feel, and not only could i not see who it was, but i couldn't twist my body enough to get out of the way. i can say without any uncertainty, if there had been a fire that day i would have died from either the fire or being trampled to death in the panic

yes, I've seen it here in Ottawa, in Montreal (see beginning of thread) but amazingly, not at the Guv. I think even Stevie Wonder could tell that the Guv is a fire hazard (among other things).

And the irony in all this is that the bar staff (ones responsible for much of this) would be able to do their jobs easier. You think bouncers and paramedics can get through crowds like that during fights, OD's, emergencies?
