Street parking scam... Watch out for this!

So Friday night im parking my car on King Street, and i walk up to the green parking pay box. This older stalky guy runs up in front of me and says "i need change let me buy your ticket" as he sticks his credit card in. He looks normal enough so i agree. He hands me the ticket and i put it in my car, i give him the 8 bucks and thats that. So im walking down the street 30 seconds later and im thinking to myself "that guy was really nice.... wait a minute, this is toronto, people here arent that nice... whats up?"

I go back to the car and look at the ticket. It was bought at the SAME LOCATION at almost THE SAME TIME but THE DAY BEFORE. So i was lucky enough to catch up with him on the other side of the street. I approach him and said "we have a problem" and told him that the ticket was for the 19th but today was the 20th. He said "well u saw me buy the ticket blah blah blah" so he took out his card and bought a ticket. This time it was real.

Now i dont know what to think of this. Obviously its a scam but is he scamming the $8 or does it run deeper than that? My question is, how does he get EXPIRED parking tickets for the same location and the same times but on different days?

This guy was no crackhead either. He looked like a big burly blue collar type of guy.

Something stinks thats all i can say!!

Yea.. I wonder how the scam works.. i mean it's 8 bucks.. The guy has to somehow GET the ticket. and obviously he doesn't get it back after he scams you...

Interesting though.

it almost worked on me...

almost...

now i have the ticket he bought with his credit card... contemplating calling the police. Perhaps they can trace it back through the ticket?

Its probably a stolen card anyways LOL

Well, a few possibilities...

1. He has accomplices that actually use the lot, they give him their tickets when they leave, and he "scalps" them the next day. They're trying to get free parking.

2. He's just collecting whatever random parking tickets he finds lying around (some people probably throw them out, or on the ground), and pulling the scam at the same time next day. Basically he's just desperate for a few extra bucks.

3. He's using a stolen card. That was what you suggested, however, it doesn't make a lot of sense; seems to me that if he had a valid but stolen card, he'd be buying good tickets and pocketing the cash. Why make it more difficult by using tickets that people could spot as bogus?

4. He's cooperating with the lot owners/attendants in some way. Maybe it's a crooked lot and they just wanted you to leave an expired ticket in your car so they could saddle you with a fine.

My bet is on #2. You think it's something bigger but I think it's just scrounging and petty theft. Anything's possible, though.

i agree with number 2.
i see people leave those tickets all the time underneath their windshield wipers lol. dumb asses.

But this was street parking...Municipal tickets... not a lot...

Thats why im suspecting its more.

There were guys like this in LA that would take your money and put it in the meter for you.

If you didn't tip them - your car got robbed or scratched or whatever.

I suspect a combination of old tickets and a stolen card for when he get's busted, as in your case. $8 adds up quickly, if you scam 20 people a day, and you only do this Mon-Fri you're making more than $40K, tax free.

Posted by StereoPrincess on Apr-23-2007 16:46:

probably stolen credit card.

Posted by zokissima on Apr-23-2007 17:41:

Wait, I just did this for someone a couple of days ago. No I didn't scam them, the machine just would not take their coins. So yea, there ARE some nice people in TO...
