DJs on the Mic

what you guys think about this?

I was listening to Carl Cox and was thinking about it...

do you think its good and improves crowd interaction or its just plain cheesy?

Dubfire does it as well it seems from Pics.. i guess its ok sometimes
its better than wehn theres an annoying MC who screams retarded sayings that just piss me off and cuts off the important breakdowns or buildups with this retarded "LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS" or whatnot

Carl Cox is the only one I've seen pull it off well. I think that's because he finds the right time in the music to talk over and build up the crowd before the track that's playing goes crazy. Also because the music he plays is total energy. You wouldn't want to talk over minimal, tech house, or even trance for that matter.

My general reaction to DJ's who talk (other than Carl Cox) is "Shut up and just play some f*ing music".

Just my opinion though.

Johan Gielen use to. I only heard Ferry done it one time.

Coxy is a legend.

hmmm i don't mind DJs who talk from time to time...I mean...I haven't touched the mic for ages...but there was a girl who lost her mobile in the club...so I took the mike and told the people if they found it that they can come to me on the stage and I'll return it...thanks god...it was there in like 3 minutes and I saved the day (again) lol...well...I guess there are events on ordinary club nights when you have an excuse to talk to the microphone really...

other than that...I'd not talk/see a DJ talk on a big event...

Posted by Mmanu on Apr-23-2007 13:41:

^^^^ yes, that can be useful in that case. But a Dj that talks more than plays music is a boring old pain in the ass, period. That's what MCs are for anyway. I use my mic once every 10 years or so.

I don't use mine much more...I just wanted to point out that it's not a hard no-no...and people will like if you're down to earth willing to help if you can...

And I don't suppose your motivation may have been that you'd have got a nice enthusiastic sloppy blowjob for your troubles would it!?!?

And crikey - Sonique sings to her sets, or used to. That used to suck. But probably not as hard as the girl who's phone you managed to find for her!!!

Did you mack the chick?

I hate it. I went to a club on the weekend where flip and fill (yeah i no they mostly play cheese) were playing and it was quite a nice set, except it was ruined by some moron who felt he had to yell stuff at the crowd in the all through every track, especially in the breakdowns. It completely ruins the atmosphere imo

Carl Cox does a good job, as well as whoever was on the mic in the famous, "Carl Cox eating corn on the cob" video. Another notable mention would be Donald Glaude. He doesn't really get on the mic but he occasionally yells something towards the crowd and it works quite well.

Unless your name is Sven Vath, no.

Glaude over does it from time to time though. And he only says two things: PUT YOUR FUCKING HANDS UP! and MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE!

It also works with only certain genres, usually funk or something hard techy.

Most DJs don't have that mic presence too.

And drunken mic talk just gets annoying
