A few years ago, an obesity researcher at the University of Washington named Adam Drewnowski ventured into the supermarket to solve a mystery. He wanted to figure out why it is that the most reliable predictor of obesity in America today is a persons wealth. For most of history, after all, the poor have typically suffered from a shortage of calories, not a surfeit. So how is it that today the people with the least amount of money to spend on food are the ones most likely to be overweight?

for the c0r buffoons: its about how the US Farm Bill causes your socioeconomic status to influence the quality of the food you eat.

Because when poor people get to the cash and don't have enough money to pay for all their food they take away the healthy shit and keep the junk food. I've seen this too many time.

As long as we continue to subsidize high fructose corn syrup and invade foreign countries, we're winning, right? RIGHT?

I'll be in my bunker counting my canned goods and ammunition if anyone needs me.

dont be a buffoon and read the article. its clear and concise.

frenchie: read it. it has nothing to do with that. it has to do with the price of the food and why junk food is so cheap.

i dont know how it is in canada but thats not it. if i go to the store i can spend $50 and have food for 2 weeks if i buy the junk. if i want to eat healthy and not eat processed foods and cook everything i will spend at LEAST $100, but more than likely closer to $150 for 2 weeks! and thats for ONE person! think about those poor families that have just 2 kids and both parents. thats 4 people. so $150x4 is $600 for TWO weeks! $1200 a month. thats a HUGE chunk of a families income if they are making lets give them a take home pay of 1800 a month. rent is 800. hmm thats more than they have.

ps i dont eat that much either.

funny i have actually done some reaserch on this subject.

here in the US the poorest poeple are teh fattest as mentioned in the article, yet in guatemala and most 3rd world countries... the richest are the most overweight and the poor stay poor.

mostly becaue the poor population here eat fast food, while in 3rd world countries they eat tortillas, rice, beans, eggs etc.

yeah, location plays a big [lol, no pun intended] factor on it. here in the south, tho, almost everyone's kinda fat....regardless of income.
