In all seriousness, the only reason I even mentioned it is because at one point, the last post in every forum I subscribe to had the exact same spam post in it from 3 different bots

yeah been banning tons of these, but can't clean up stuff other than the main forums so that's the only problem...and since most of those mods probably aren't super active...have to wait for like neo and swamper to clean them...

Yeah, no worries man - I really didn't expect them to be cleansed instantly, it just really seemed like there were more than usual today for some reason.

A large portion of these spambots can be prevented if we reinstate user approval. Regardless of what sorts of new filters are in place there's certainly been an influx of spam since we lost it. It'd be a lot better if we could get someone to do that.

user approval won't be reinstated, Swamper wants ppl to be able to sign up and post straight away and i agree with this but i have suggested an image verifcation type of system, this will allow instant sign ups and posting for new members and should prevent spambots.
We just got to wait and see what happens now.

I am just as fed up with the spambots as you guys are, they take up a lot of my TA online time deleting them and thier posts/threads.

The filters are working, they are catching about 95% of spambots at the moment, imagine what TA would be like if those filters were not in place!

There is a thread in the site suggestions section of TA for reporting of spambots.

Some do, some don't, Swamper deals with all the coding etc and as TA forums are highly modified by him from the original set up, he only trusts himself to implement new features (can't blame swamper for that! lol) so if its a good suggestion and doable i am sure Swamper takes those suggestions on board.

they also post in the members sig over size thread, great for me as i am subscribed to both threads and get almost instant notification of thier presence lol

Out of curiosity (because I'm clueless on the issue), how hard would it be to implement one of those alphnumeric verification systems into the registration process?

That seems like a pretty foolproof solution to the problem - but as I have no idea how difficult/easy it is to do, I've got no idea whether or not it's a realistic suggestion.

From what little I've looked into it it seems to be a fairly simple process. Though like Simon mentioned a few posts up, Del's really changed a lot of the code from what it was originally, so it could differ for this situation.

And I support anything that makes the sign-up process that much more challenging.

Am I wrong in assuming that a process like that would essentially eliminate spambots, or have they found a way to circumvent that already as well?

I really have no idea what it takes to stop these kinds of things from happening - that just seems like a pretty solid means of protection.

You're not. I've not seen a way of getting around it, but it wouldn't surprise me if there already is one or if someone's close to figuring it out.

It's possible to make programs that can read letters / numbers embedded in images.

One forum I saw used an image verification that made you solve a simple math problem (embedded in the image) and type the answer into the text box. I doubt any spam bots cracked that one.
