What makes a rave a rave?

I've always wondered about this. Looking at it from another angle, what's not a rave?

What stops most of the rooms in The Guvernment from being a rave?

Is it that it is known on a commercial level and raves are only underground and hard to find out about?

Is it because it's not a special event and takes place every weekend?

Or is it that it's completely legal and is not at a risk of being raided? And if that is the case.. does this make WEMF not a rave?

A rave is what all the above are not

A rave (sometimes referred to as a rave party or simply a party) is an all-night dance event where DJs and other performers play rave music and other types of electronic dance music.

There's no such thing as "raves" anymore

you're a fucking rave.

ps: if you have to ask "is this a rave?", you haven't been to one.

the word 'rave' is like, so, 1997

i dunno. the only time i use the word rave is to make a distinction to people (who know little about EDM) between guv events and regular clubs.. just a euphemism for saying long sketchy dance music parties i guess. when i think of real raves i think about parties in old warehouses or fields, with candy kids, girls dressed as fairies, cargo pants, etc. and old sounding EDM... not that i've experienced it first hand or anything, but i imagine the atmosphere was much, much different than even the most hype events that happen anywhere around here and that was a part of what defined it.

i guess everything today is simply 'after-hours partying/clubbing'?

Yeah. If you have to ask if it's a rave, then it's not a rave.

And if you call it a rave, but it's not a rave, then it's still not a rave.

Posted by Swamper on Apr-30-2007 02:55:

A large part of the 'rave' experience rests upon the venue - specifically, it's inherent lack of predictability of what kind of experience you'll have within its walls (or lack thereof).

Clubs lose this quality VERY quickly and are forced to compete with regards to sound, talent and their regular clientele.

any event in a club is not really a rave as far as im concerned, they are just parties.

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A RAVE,

Go to Funhaus on the first saturday of any given month

that is the closest thing you will find to a rave in toronto

DJ Dwight spins there doesn't he?

Worm Popper

Darkrave is the closest thing to a rave I have encountered in a 19+ environment.

Isn't the TAZ ethos part of raving?

I did find that the lack of predictability in comforts (venue, washrooms) got tired very quickly for me. I'm not trying to change people's lives, just want to have a good time on the weekend.

That said, there's something fresh and exciting about a true rave.

that just contributes to the blatant misrepresentation of the word.

there is no "rave music". there are no "rave clubs". there were "raves", and if there still are raves, they're over-commercialized (which dilutes the actual rave-aspect) because they don't have the draw they did in the past, due to the development of the club scene.

raves were underground, and the locations were rarely publicly announced. very exciting, could be broken up at any second, and you had to run for fear of getting arrested. you knew shouldn't have been there, but you knew that you were a part of something revolutionary.

any city that has a scene probably had raves in the past, and anyone that went to those raves still feels the itch to get out to clubs, because they were a part of what many people still don't understand today.

watch "Groove" if you want a good idea of what a rave is.

They still happen in wharehouses around the city. I havent been to any recently, but Michelle (LittlePoonzgirl) has. At least 3 or 4 times since Jan too I am sure.

One was broken up by the cops... so it switched locations. The one she was just at 2 weekends ago never got broken up, which was fantastic she said.

You're right, they're not really publically announced. You have to know where to look or who to talk to often find out about them.

DarkRave used to be so much better when it was at the Big Bop. We used to go every month religiously, now we go once in a while, if that. Funhaus is too small for the amount of people Darkrave brings in.
