Nightclubber shot in stomach

DETECTIVES have launched a hunt for two men who fled a Melbourne nightclub after gunning down a patron at the weekend.
The two men, one armed with a handgun, confronted their victim while he was standing at the bar inside the Viper Room, in Prahran, around 5.40am Sunday.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Allan Price said words were exchanged between the two parties before one of the men pulled a gun from his jacket and shot the 34-year-old victim once in the stomach.
The pair then fled downstairs and, after being stopped and challenged by a club security guard, eventually fled the venue and were last seen walking along Chapel Street towards Malvern Road.
"The security staff were not initially aware of exactly what happened. No one actually heard the gunshot because the club was so noisy,'' Sen Sgt Price, of the Armed Crime Taskforce said.
"The two men came running downstairs and the security guard grabbed them, probably wondering why they were in a hurry.
"They tried to assault the guard as well but then left the venue.''
The injured man, from Epping, on Melbourne's northern outskirts, was able to call a taxi and have himself driven to the nearby Alfred hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Sen Sgt Price said the victim was in a stable condition in hospital and had been questioned by detectives investigating the attack.
"From what we can tell, the two parties were not known to each other. This appears to be a random attack,'' Sen Sgt Price said.
"We'd ask anyone who might recognise the two men in the images to come forward.''
