Hello! anyone here from brazil

Im just curious if anyone on here is from brazil and if so do you practice capoeira. They have a class opening here soon and im thinking of joining , but dont know if im to old to start something like that. I think its the most beautiful martial art.

Posted by Swamper on May-02-2007 03:07:

as long as you're flexible then you should do ok

Posted by igottaknow on May-02-2007 03:12:

lira is from brazil.

Well, I don't really practise capoeira, but I can play the berimbau

As Swamper said, as long as you're flexible, I don't see a problem. Your instructor/teacher/master will certainly give you some advice, and tell you what you need (and whether you're fit to practise)

*waits for lim f(x) = f(a)*

It's a fun art.... the Yoga of martial arts I call it. It good for fitness and art, not for helping when you're in inevitable trouble.

is capoeira the art of cutting down the rain forest as quicly as you can?

Posted by wotyzoid on May-02-2007 03:34:

yeserp, Brasileiro aqui!

Yeh i know a little but its hard to master the "ginga" once you first start but after that it gets easier, i think every brazilian knows a little bit of capoeira, back in 2000 or so it was like the biggest thing.

Na it's just one of those things where too much of one type of people just suffocates you. Sometimes I feel like I'm in Brazil.

When I was in Croatia I felt like I was in Australia which annoyed the hell out of me. Went on holiday to get away and every second person was an Aussie. Grrr!

No hate for anyone though. Brazilians are pretty fun people

you should have titled the thread capoeira rather than brazil, cause despite the fact it's native to brazil, these days you could probably find more practicers around the world than in brazil itself.

as in most martial arts, there's no hard & fast cut off age.

ironically wrong. capoeira was developed to be seen as a dance and include many diversions, but it was practiced for self defence. i once broke someone's shoulder with a single calculated capoeira kick.

it's possible that there are mestres who no longer teach the self defence aspects of the art, but they're not the majority.

Posted by Fledz on May-02-2007 14:26:

Yea, Capoeira was outlawed so it was developed into a dance to mask the training of it. Someone who knows the art very well can apply much of the skill in fighting.

Posted by wotyzoid on May-02-2007 16:13:

actually the storie is :

Before brazil abolished slavery ,like fledz and psy t said, slaves would practice around the fire at night and their masters would think they were dancing, so during rebelions slaves would use this martial arts style and defend themselves or attack their masters killing planty of them.

They also invented feijoada as a secret weapon - don't approach feijoada eaters, for the love of God!

The basic stuff is easy to do. Now if you wanna do flip flops and stuff, that is another story.
You can do a lot with the basics.. just go for it, try a few lessons out and see for yourself

Posted by Abercrombie on May-02-2007 17:39:

I can just picture capoeira used in a barfight.
