Darude

What happened to this guy? Did he die? Hasn't been any trace of him since 2003.

he has a new track out, pretty crap

I was wrong. He just made a comeback with a new single "Tell Me". Pretty cool. Give a listen at http://www.myspace.com/darude. A glimmer of hope in the dark trance tunnel.

casue its one of the worst things iv ever heard..reminds me of gabry ponty's solo work after he quit eiffel 65.

I dunno what he's been doing as a producer, but if he's ever in your town DJing, go check him out. He will shock you. He's actually damn good.

And yes, be prepared to hear Sandstorm. But he doesn't just play the track, but rather incorporates it into his sets creatively, basically as a couple of mashups that are edited very well. It's hard to explain. You prob will think to expect cheese, but I've yet to be disappointed by any of his sets I've heard live.

Ask anyone in San Francisco who knows me and I'm one of the biggest hardass critics around and nitpick DJ sets and find every issue with them, and even I don't really have anything but good things to say about him as a DJ.

Hmm i wish i've known that. He was playing at a local club and i passed because....well, its darude.

Not seen him live but I heard a couple of his sets & they've been brilliant. Hunt em down, highly recommended

+1 to this post... he put on a MUCH better show than I expected! One of my favorite events to date.

And I like him as a producer... I don't really shun a producer just because "zomg Sandstorm went so MAINSTREAM". This new song sounds pretty good... I'm not typically a fan of male vocals in songs like this, but it could definitely be much worse. I'd like to hear an instrumental version.

Yeh, honestly, i think he is a loy better than a lot of the the dj who suposedly try to stay away from mainstream. I've heard some of his sets and i was truly impressed.

I've seen him live twice now. Good DJ, and doesn't structure the entire set to revolve around sandstorm/feel the beat. Good track selection both times and an all around thumpin' shows.

Is the singer actually the former singer of Eiffel 65?

no, but he does sound like one of those singers from Bliss co (eiffel 65s old label)

Looking back, I really don't understand why Sandstorm went mainstream. It's quite shit, but I don't think it has any big appeal to the general public neither, it's purely electronic and "flat", not particularly anthem-ey or emotional. And somehow I understood it back then, since I liked it. What the hell?

You just answered your own question there.

Shit tracks don't automatically go mainstream. Shit tracks with appeal to the masses do (ex: sappy lyrics to sing, simple melody that gets stuck on your head, trendy music video which every teen finds cool, ...).

I just dunno wtf was the appeal there. My theory is that some music industry big boss saw potential for a purely electronic track to sell big, so he went to mp3.com, bought the #1 in the chart and marketed the shit out of it until it eventually did sell relatively big.

Over-simplified hooks, cheesy as hell, no complexity, no depth. Exactly the same reasons why Children became famous. Sounds like a formula for success to me.

But Children was much, much catchier.

Sandstorm in it's day was a great track, and I'll take it over any 'Dance' track on the radio now.
