ppl with earrings...help!

alright so i have both of my ears peirced with studs... i got the left one done first about 5 months ago and then i got the right one done in march. ive been cleaning both with antiseptic pretty often. so a few days ago my left earlobe started to hurt a little any time i applied pressure to it (headphones, lying down). i went to clean both today and i noticed my left ear lobe's a little red and puffier than the other one. clearly swollen. so i clean the right one and then on the left one theres all this black shit from the earring. so i cleaned it all off with the antiseptic and my question is, is the swelling gonna go away now (if i keep cleaning) or should i take the earring out?

also if i take it out is the hole gonna close up?

Black shit? Ive had my ears peirced for years & i have never had that happen. The sweelling prolly means infection & the black stuff might actually be dried blood. But i would take the earring out if i saw that. I guess its better to be safe then sorry. Hope it gets better for ya.

It's infected, take the stud out and leave it for a month or 2 and then get it redone when it's healed up. If the lump doesn't go away or continues to hurt for more than a week then go to the doctor and get it looked at as you might have an abscess in there and it'll need to be lanced

yeah it could be infected..... due to posts....What type of posts?? Gold, Silver, Surgical Steel?? You could be having a reaction.... i can only wear silver in any of my piercings... gold makes my ears hurt and the lobe gets red and swells. plus gold and green/brown skin IMO; don't mix
any way: get some peroxide and some anti-bacterial ointment, take out the old one and have your new, CLEANED AND LUBED -w/ointment - earing ready and put it in. Not only will the oiment heal the infection, but also heal the wounds as well.
hope you get better:

thanks for the advice guys, ill take it out as soon as possible.

edit: ah i just checked, its a gold post. same exact earing as the right one except the post on the right one is silver. it could def be a reaction to the gold

when i had my belly button pierced, it got infected real bad one time and i tried every kind of disinfectant but nothing worked. i was just about to take it out when i tried putting the liquid antibacterial soft soap on it, it worked like a charm, putting the soap right on and leaving it.

I thought your chances of infection were reduced if you had a gold earing? Same thing happened to me anyways. It got puffy and any pressure on it became painful. I just kept using the antiseptic and keeping it clean. Eventually it cleared up. Never took it out.

You have an infection.

Take the earring out. Continue to clean the ear. When the ear has healed... put the earring back in.

P.S. Thoroughly clean the earring too.

you could probably leave the earring in, but i would switch to a surgical steel hoop instead of a stud. in my experience, studs are terrible when you have an infection, because they don't let the hole breathe, the closure piece usually irritates the infection more, and you cant really move them around when you cleanse it with soap/Bactine.

something like this:

You could very well have an allergy to metals. There is nickel in stainless steel and a lot of people are sensitive to it. Im one of them. Im fine w/ my ear piercing, but I got my belly & tongue pierced when I was 18 for a new york minute. I did everything I was supposed to and it never healed properly so I was like screw this and I took them out. Not really into piercings any more anyway, but I still have my ears done. Even when I wear real jewelry like necklaces, sometimes I get like a little itchy patch on my neck and it goes away when I take the necklace off, but it doesnt happen all the time, its weird. I just deal with it and its a price to pay for wearing jewelry.

Anyway, point is, you might be allergic to nickel or something in metalseven the real stuff.

It won't be the gold, it's non-reactive with anything running around in your body. Jewellery like a stud however, is usually made of a harder alloy of gold which helps it keep its rigidity when they bang it in.
24ct is 100%, 22ct is 91.6%, 18ct is 75%, 14ct is 58.5% and 9ct is 37.5% pure gold, the rest is a mix of copper and silver which also increase it's hardness, both are fairly prone to corrosion and need to be cleaned and the amount of either will give it a certain colour, generally the more pink-red the more copper in it and if its a pale yellow to whitish it will have more silver in it.

Seeing as you've got a silver one in there which is a fairly strong metal and probably pure silver I would say it's the copper which is giving you the grief and that will turn a blackish-very dark green if it corrodes.

Dont take the earring out. If it really is infected (which I dont think it is), then it will start to close up and continue to be infected except you wont be able to clean it as thoroughly as you would if you left the stud in.

Dont take it out. Keep cleaning. It will get better in a week.

I cant believe people told you to take it out. Jesus. Why do people give advice around here when they obviously have no idea what theyre talking about?!

Youve got to clean it twice a day, make sure to rinse it thoroughly. And, as a piercer, I dont use anything but the orange Dial antibacterial soap that you can buy in Walmart in the pump bottle. Trust me. Twice a day and itll be better in a week.

Safest option, you don't know if it's just a minor infection or an abscess from just him saying so, neither do I. So I just suggested that he take it out if it's really hurting him as I'd say it's the metal in the stud that's doing it and see a doctor.
Normally it's fine and will heal without any antibiotics or extra cleaning (stay away from alcohol based ones), worst case they debride the area and that won't be much fun.
