Big Rig Plows Into The Rear Of The Vehicle

MISSION VIEJO, May 4, 2007 (CNS) - Two 3-year-old girls died today and their mother, brother and grandmother were critically injured when a big rig plowed into the family's minivan on the San Diego (5) Freeway in Mission Viejo, authorities said.

The tractor-trailer rear-ended the van carrying the five family members about 1:10 p.m. on the southbound 5, north of Oso Parkway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Katrina Lundgren.

A GMC Yukon was also involved in the collision, but it was not immediately clear if anyone in the SUV or the truck was injured, she said.

An Orange County Fire Authority unit was nearby and quickly got to the accident scene, declaring the victims dead on-site at 1:15 p.m., Lundgren said.

The children's mother was airlifted to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, she said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, Lundgren said. The investigation will be conducted by officers in the CHP's Capistrano office.

I live in San Diego and was up working for the week in Redondo Beach. Left Redondo around 12:30pm that Friday to beat the traffic. I was on the 5 right about the time it happened. I knew something bad happened when I saw at least 4 to 5 ambulances, 5 police cars and 2 fire trucks pass me lights blazing through the carpool lanes. I was about a mile away from the accident when I saw the life flight chopper land on the freeway. Drove past it about 15 min later and the wreck was pretty wicked. My heart goes out to the family.

More to the story. Three children died. Quite sad. The driver of the big rig sounds a little suspicious. Bastard.

I got caught in the traffic driving back from my sister's... she lives off of Oso. What a mess... way more glass on the ground though than what the chopper shows. I though all the windows had to be absolutely destroyed!

Accident wasn't that far away from my house.
Now everytime I drive by there, it doesn't feel the same.
It's a shame the kids are gone.
