Smiley DJ Promoting yourself

Hey everybody,

I was wondering what is the best way to promote yourself as a dj in Toronto. I would like to spin at some parties, big or small, doesn't matter. I know in Toronto its really hard to get recognized, and i just want to hand out my sets, which I have nicely recorded on cd's. I spin Hard Trance and Hardstyle.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them, or if you are a promoter, you want to listen to some good sets?

For your style in music, I'd recommend TorontoRaves

I know that many dj's are turning to other genres, ie: shranz, munggle etc. Trance in this city is dying slowly, and I have always loved trance, I just want to help keep it alive, and YES there is still a loyal following for trance, actually I spin HARD trance. And Hardstyle is becoming very popular to spin at parties.
Maybe thats what the problem is in this city, everybody is looking for something new ... but remember trance will never die!! , and Hardstyle is getting bigger and bigger.

Now can somebody please answer my original question.

i havent really seen many hardstyle events in the city and when they do happen, it pulls in like 80 people. i dont exactly consider that to be big. trance and house is definitely what toronto prefers.

free B.J with every cd...then people will remember you and will be more likely to come to yer gigs making you more appealing to promoters.

I actually have no idea what Munggle sounds like, but there are a few dj's in and around Toronto that spin it. Shranz is kinda like Hard hard trance, check out samples on Bangingtunes.com

C.O. thanks for fixing my arse, lol

In general, I would tell you to support other people's events with enthusiasm, introduce yourself and just get to know people.

Throwing your own parties is always a sure way to get to play too.

The genre you spin is such a niche market here though that I won't lie...it will be difficult.

I know that it will be difficult, but thats the type of music that I love, and love to spin, and am pretty good at it too.
Too bad there aren't any trance dj competitions.

Throw your own events and do a bang-up job of it. If it goes well, it increases demand. The mere perception that you suddenly have booking power raises your profile in turn. That's just how it works. The same thing applies when you begin to produce.

If there isn't much of a hardstyle following in the city I am sure you could start to strike one up... DJ Klonez from out in London was getting things going there, and he gets overseas gigs for his production work from what I understand. All this talk of schmoozing it up and passing on demos won't help you too much; you have to create demand to get the exposure you want. Essentially, if you are just DJing, don't count on much unless there is some bizarre lack of DJs for your style and correspondingly high demand (which won't last long anyhow). Good luck anyway.

If you throw your own events make sure you put them in the event thread too. You never know how many hard-style listeners that may be surfing this board and not post. I think there's a number of ppl who do post actually that like that style too.

Deltawye do you have a website or profile somewhere?

your TA profile has no links at the moment. since you are getting exposure via this thread it would be great if you can link your TA profile to your site so we can hear samples and more about your work

Also don't forget the TOTA DJ MXES thread.
