My laptop has shut off a couple times with no warning. Did some research and found out they do that when it goes over a certain temperature. Need to get my fan checked/fixed.

I've run down more laptops at work than I can count. All were like top of the line ones, each over $5,000!!!

Because of that, we moved to trying small form factor PCs for our road trips where we needed to do HD editing....they lasted one big event (Tokyo Game Show) and died a couple months later.

Since then we've takes our $25,000-$45,000 systems with us. lol.

well this is how i keep my laptop cool duing these hot days at home
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
the laptop is elevated for the ducts on the bottom

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
air (and dust :/ )blows from the floor into my face and creates a little breeze under the laptop

of course, nothing to worry about at the libraries since they are air conditioned (and very well, might i add)

For overheating problems i would regrease the heatsink in the laptop, but the easiest way without opening up a laptop, is to remove the dust with a hair dryer or use dust can and blow it through the vents. Ive fixed many overheating laptops this way. BTW dont buy toshiba , they have alot of overheating and fan problems.

like i said this post wasnt really about laptops overheating.....but ok

+1 on toshiba laptops being crap. Avoid sony as well, they're pretty on the outside, bargain bin components inside.
