Toronto councillor wants to create red light district on Toronto island

Toronto - A Toronto councillor wants to turn one of the islands into hooker haven.

Georgio Mammoliti said it would allow the city to put the massage business into one area.

Mammoliti wants city staff to study the experiences of Amsterdam and other cities that have legalized prostitution and restricted it to specific areas.

After that, he is intending to investigate a non-residential part of town for the red light district.

However, the Sex Workers Alliance of Toronto said such an arrangement would not clean the streets of prostitution.

"Not everybody wants to work in a massage parlour, so it will continue that there will be those working outside the red light district," one sex trade worker said.

Since Toronto island is not only a tourist attraction, but also a place for families, many residents are not pleased with this idea and are calling it "ridiculous."

"It's clearly a controversial idea...I don't think that's what you want in your city," one resident said.

So far, Mammoliti has only named the Toronto Island as a possible location.

I can't believe that there's actually a "Sex Workers Alliance of Toronto".

Seeing as I'm still unemployed, I wonder how much I'd get paid as one of these legit hookers.

Too easy.

P.S. Malek - Conservative Toronto? Are you joking? Toronto is one of the most liberal cities in Canada. I realize that Montreal is even more liberal, but come on - try comparing us to Quebec City or Ottawa.

the only (few) places that i know of that have designated zones for hookers are in europe, and I don't think any North American cities come close to the liberalism they have over there.

Posted by 7-4-7 on May-11-2007 07:34:

drug users and party goers complain which I find very interesting...some people use hookers and some people use drugs...both are illegal WHY?...guess he is asking to change that, dunno why this is so absurd.

$600? Damn, I guess if it's unregulated the prices are crazy. From what I've seen in Amsterdam it's $50 EU for a half hour, 80 EU for an hour...*ahem*

As for this councilor...good idea, on the island though? Mebbe it'll shut up the islanders...bad idea though because NOBODY wants to take a ferry over there for something like that unless they're super desperate.
