I have Goa-head 9 - not a big Goa/Psy fan - but I like it every so often. In fact I am going to a goa event in a couple of weeks. No big names or anything - just local DJs I think - but should be good.

Anyways since I dunno what kinda stuff you consider cheese, I'll just list the artists on the disc:

Cypher - Riding on a White Rabbit
Jupiter 8000 - Jupiter 8000
Shakta - Between Worlds
Astral Projection - Trance Dance
Son Kite - Knob Adjustment
Sun Project - Computer-Breath
CHI-AD - Moonart
Space Tribe - Telepatic
Hippiehaus - No Peace

Earth - Prolinear
Mittelstandskinder Ohne Strom - Live Tropical Fish
Element - Coldcut
COP - Bloodsuckers
Cybersnack - Live At Tao
Pleidians - Meter
Synchro - Nebula
Intact Instinct - Access All Areas
Ouija - Absolut Limit

(I like the artist/title of that tropical fish one!! funny)

ICQ/email if you want any of these - only 56k modem so not ultra quick - details in my profile

Goa is the name of a city in India. Somehow the music has it's origins and ties from there, i can't be totally sure of it. I got this from some goa trance webpage:

quote:

Goa is a paradise on the shores of India, a place where hippies and travellers have retired or retreated to since the sixties. It is also the starting point of a vibrant type of dance music named after the area. Goa trance is best described as a psychedelic dance music and is somehow an evolution of the european trance. In Goa, India the main dance drug is LSD. Needless to say, the music and many of it's its composers take full advantage of this, constructing each song with a complex weaving of synth, 303 and analog noises into a powerful, kaleidescopic tapestry of sound. Then add to this strange samples from films and other sources, and whooshes and bleeps that further stimulate the psychoactive mind. The beat is a steady 4/4 kick but is often hidden deep within the twirling array of analog sounds. Much of the melody comes with a constant barrage of evolving 16th or 32nd note sound streams.

Major record labels involved in the Goa trance scene include Dragonfly, Flying Rhino, TIP, Transient, Blue Room, Matsuri, Psy Harmonics and many smaller labels. Examples of groups producing goatrance is Hallucinogen, Total Eclipse and Astral Projection, Koxbox, Shakta, Pleiadians, MFG and many many more. As with most electronic musicians goatrance artist also often record under several names and coorporate with other groups.

Goa trance has been with us for longer than you might think. At leats since '92. But many of the known DJ has played in at least 8 years.
One major reason for the rising popularity is the amount of people moving away from Ecstasy as a dance drug and towards LSD, for which this music is geared. The build up of a resistance to ecstasy, its diminished quality over recent years and the fact that LSD cannot be adulterated being contributing factors.

Goa trance could be compared to classical music, because the tracks take you on a journey and have a proper beginning and end, and that it seems to have more substance than other dance music (if you are used to it and know what to look for). Carefully chosen samples contribute far more than empty vocals, meaningless words. The power in a Goa track is in the evolution.

I have about 5 or 6 goa/psy trance albums, and my favourite one is still "Classical Mushroom" by Infected Mushroom... It's a phenomenal piece of work...

-----------

Apparently the beginning/middle/end is because it is hot in Goa. The vinyl would get very hot and warped. Vinyl could therefore not be mixed, so tracks were prerecorded on DAT tapes. Then played at parties from the tape.

Well that is what I heard anyways
