-- Discussion on the new direction of CN's Adult Swim.

Question Discussion on the new direction of CN's Adult Swim.

c0r version: Why do you, or do you not, like the direction Adult Swim on Cartoon network is going?

I've noticed that especially over the last year, former c0r AS addicts have slowly but surely begun to dislike the new programming AS has.

In my opinion, this is completely understandable, as the new shows are in many ways a huge departure from the previous success of shows like "Sealab 2021" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." The humor is significantly more abstract, and more than likely appeals to a more and more narrow fanbase.

On the other hand, I have really, really been enjoying some of the new shows. I really didn't care for "Squidbillies" at all, nor do I enjoy "Assy McGee", but there are a few that others have panned that I'm really enjoying.

I thought "Tom Goes to the Mayor" was brilliant, albeit completely different than the majority of what's on TV as "funny" right now, and I feel even more strongly about "Tim & Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job!" A lot of complaints I've heard are that the show simply doesn't make sense, but it does - you just have to pay attention. I know it seems odd, but it isn't the simple dick & fart joke humor that's easily accessible and everyone "gets."

I also really enjoy "Saul of the Molemen," it reminds me of childrense TV I watched as a child if it were done by the crew that does Monty Python.

And I hope "Moral Orel" never dies. Lampooning the Evangelical Right is something I'm all for - and I think it's one of the funniest shows AS has ever put out.

Beyond that, I guess I'm really only creating this to see what some of the genuine criticisms you all have of the "new" Adult Swim?

Mayor and Dr. Ian Black: (doing a weird sort of handshake) Ricka ticka tick tock tick tock tock! Ring! Ringa ding ding ringa ding ding! Ricka dick rick ricka dick rick! Ringa dinga ding ding dong! Rim rim rim rim!
Mayor: Michael! How long has it been old friend?
Black: Too long, you sneaky devil.
Mayor: You CRABAPPLE!
Black: You delicious horseshoe crab!
Mayor: Ohhh I'd pinch you with my claws if I had any! Hee hee hee hee hee!
(Tom looks very awkward)
Black: Who's that?
Mayor: Oh that's toad, tash, tabim, taaaaaay...
Black: Looks like a Steven to me!
(Both of them laugh)
Mayor: Ahahaha Oooh Steven.
Black: Hello Steven.
Tom: Well, actually it's Tom Peters.
(Awkward silence)
Black: So, anyway, I got this new company car. It's really nice.
Mayor: What kind is it?
Black: You'll never guess.
Mayor: A LeBaron?
Black: A LeBaron!
(They do the handshake again, with Tom looking increasingly awkward.)

Funputer: Funputer does not recognise the word 'who' did you mean 'horsey'?

Need I say more?

TGTM was my fave.

Super Prison was awesome.

But it was a special. So there won't be anymore.

I haven't watched much Adult Swim lately, but if it's anything like the thread a few down from this one then I doubt I'll like it. However, I'll give the shows a good watch this week to see what all of the hubbub is about.

How can this be labeled as anything other then pure genius ?

Posted by wotyzoid on May-16-2007 18:21:

ehh the only shows on adult swim i dig are futurama(one of my fave shows ever), family guy and aqua teen but i never really stay up late enough to watch the other shows so my intake is pointless.

A lot of the new live action shows don't do anything for me. I haven't watched Saul of the Molemen yet, it looks pretty funny. The Tim & Eric Awesome show I can't stand, same with Tom Goes To The Mayor. It had it's funny stuff but for the most part was just not my cup of tea. Morel Orel, however, hilarious. I love that show. The other day I watched this thing called "Fat Guy Stuck in Internet". I haven't laughed that hard in a while.

See here's my thing...

There's a lot of hilarity to be found in the concept of "random." Hell, that's what I love about ATHF (though I thought the movie tried to be a bit too random). However, that clip and the one in this thread strike me as "Andy Milonakis-random" where it's just incredibly lame and comes off as, "Yeah, so uhh, I don't really have a creative idea so I'm just going to use the first thing that comes to mind, be obnoxious with it and pray to God people find it funny."

So there's part of my reason for you, Rob. I'll get back to you once I've watched some full episodes.

Robot Chicken was/is great.

I dunno cus I watch it on Youtube.

As far as I am concerned, Adult Swim is the only programming worthwhile of my actually turning on that garbage bin of depression called a television.

My only gripes are with Inuyasha being played so late. It should be played earlier so it's easier for me to avoid it.

However, one thing I hope never happens, is that AS starts being seen as a truly popular and lucrative set of programming. This will be the death of it. As corporate moguls realize that it can be exploited and given its own channel and extensive line of merchandise, it will lose its appeal as a sort of 'underground' (not really, but you know what I am getting at) flip-side to what is otherwise a children's channel.

I love the current AS lineup and hope that they continue to sign on new shows from really funny people.

And yeah, Moral Orel is fucking tight.

That's the character for 'sun'.

It literally means "day" or "days", though. So 5 days.
