You talking about the bassline or the percussion or both?

Sounds like all percussion sounds have been compressed, much like you would use the side-chain effect with the kick and bass.

You can also move hihats a couple of ticks forward so they hit very veyr very slightly early giving a rushing feel to the percussion.

Try this excellant sidechain for percussion Twisted Lemon

I'm talking about both.

I actually uses NI Battery drum machine. What should I put in the track? Kick, ride, open hihat, closed hihat... How does it looks in edit mode?

1/16.
(1) Kick for 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4.
(2) OpenHH for 1.1.2, 1.2.2, 1.3.2, 1.4.2
what's next

To get a driving sound you will have to think carefully about the sounds you are using. The programming is important but a standard 4/4 kick, off beat hihat and 2nd/4th clap will sound completely different depending on the samples you use.

Uisng a lazy 909 hihat will give you a more rolling sound whereas a tighter ride or sharper hihat may give you a bouncier sound. Prehaps layer two hihats - a short shapr hihat and then bring in a sharper ride?

K - - - K - - - K - - - K - - - KICK

C C - - C C - - C C - - C C - - CLOSED HIHAT

- - O - - - O - - - O - - - O - OPEN HIHAT

- - - - C - - - - - - - C - - - CLAP

After the Hihats normal channels then route them to a group with the Twisted Lemon sidechain on it. Follow the instructions that are on the website so you are using another version on the kick to provide the trigger. Adjust so a volume 'ducking' effect is heard on the hihats.

You could try applying a gated reverb to the clap and setting the timing so it cuts the sound abruptly exactly when the next kick hits so you left with a groove between the bare kick hitting and the kick / clap.

All this is just a basic foundation to a beat. Try layering a loop over the top, either chopped or whole. Try adding fx such as wah wah and filters etc

Hey flutlicht junky, where goes 909 ride?

Posted by DJ_Eternal on May-18-2007 21:45:

Using Flutlicht's model, I normally put my Ride's here:

K - - - K - - - K - - - K - - - KICK

R - R - R - R - R - R - R - R - RIDE

That's just a basic, you can put the rides anywhere, as lon as they create a nice rhythm in conjunction with your hi hats, clap and kick.

i find putting a few swung hihat parts alongside straight ones can create a really driving feel.

however the swung parts and the straight parts can't be the same

If you listen to the tune you'll hear that the driving part comes from the up and down groove to the tight sharp kick and the low bass creating the movement. Add a compressed hihat pattern to create the side to side movement.

It's all in the relationships
