Car Crashes Into GSP Toll Booth, Killing Driver

by KYW's Al Novack and David Madden

A single-car crash at a Garden State Parkway toll plaza has claimed the life of a driver.

New Jersey state police say the driver of a car struck a concrete "bullnose" between two toll booths on the southbound side of the Great Egg Harbor toll plaza, near Somers Point, NJ, and caught fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a state trooper.

The toll booth, between lanes 5 and 6, was unmanned at the time. There were no other injuries and no other vehicles involved.

Traffic was quickly rerouted around the accident scene, and the toll plaza continued operation with the other toll booths.

It may take a few days for repairs to be made to the plaza itself, so dont be surprised to see fewer toll lanes open through what could be a very busy weekend ahead.

I like how there was one guy who was right behind the speeder, saw the car crash and go up in flames, and didn't stop to help/see if the guy needed help or something... why would you just drive past?

i dunno man, that's a tough one... i'm sure everyone would be like "oh sure i'd stop to help" but in all reality, do you really wanna get hurt yourself? what if there's another explosion? how you gonna help a guy whose in a car that just burst into flames? you already know there's a police officer right in back of you and that's his job... sorry, i'm just thinking realistically here.

Me being a firefighter, i would stop and see if i could get to a person, but judging from the accident, the person died upon impact and the flames spread so quick i wouldnt be able to get to him anyway.
The person shouldnt have been a retard and try to drive through a booth at 90mph+

Basically, nobody could have helped him without the proper tools and a shitload of water. You would have to have the tools+water within 5 secs of the accident which is not possible.

You never know whats in the trunk of the vehicle. There couldve been a bbg gas tank or something similar.
There is nothing you could do in this situation. The person was wedged in the car anyway so without proper tools you wouldnt get him out without ripping his legs off.

No no no, I would understand not going near the car if you're a person like me (average person not a firefighter, cop, etc), plus, it might explode again or something, you don't know, but perhaps stop over to the side and wait and see if there's something you could do - maybe there's no emergency vehicles around and nobody to help for a few mins, maybe you could do something if the man managed to roll out of his car or something, I dunno.. anyway it's just weird how that other car seems to not even hesitate and just keep going, like "OH SHIT... gotta go..." haha... just something I was thinking

Some People can be selfish, But did you see the first police arrived to the scene within 10 seconds after the impact, thats pretty good actually .

yeah, police arrived ten seconds later because it was a police chase. Think about it, the dude was recklessly speeding at the toll plaza, and the cop was right there. It seems to be the only logical explanation.

ok, while that is possible (it being a car chase), i also frequently see police cars patrolling/hanging around tolls booths. at least in northern jersey.

apparently you are right. I just read (on the atlantic city press) that the cop was working at a nearby truck checkpoint. In other words, he was being lazy sitting by the plaza doing shit.

http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/...story/747SOMERS POINT A motorist was killed Thursday morning when his car crashed at high speed into a concrete barrier and toll booth on the Garden State Parkway here.

The car estimated to be traveling at about 65 mph immediately burst into flames.

State Police said troopers working at a nearby truck-exhaust checkpoint at the Great Egg toll plaza rushed to the scene, only to have their rescue attempt foiled by flames from the burning car.

They couldn't get him out, Trooper L. Chiapelli, of the State Police barracks in Bass River, said of the driver.

While State Police said they believe the dead man was from Cape May County, they were waiting for autopsy results and a check of the victim's dental records to make a positive identification. The autopsy was to be done Thursday afternoon by the Atlantic County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities also are trying to figure out just why the man crashed into the barrier, destroying the protective concrete at the unmanned toll booth.

Officials with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which operates the parkway, said they believe State Police are investigating whether the crash was the result of a medical condition.

State Police would not comment on that possibility.

Whatever the reason, authority officials who reviewed films of the crash caught by toll booth security cameras where shocked at what they saw.

You can see considerable speed at the time of the accident, Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said. The driver didn't even look like he slowed down. It just hit the barricade. It was a horrible accident.

According to Chiapelli, the accident occurred at 8:25 a.m. when the southbound car arrived at the toll booth. Witnesses said the vehicle appeared to be heading for an E-ZPass toll lane, he said.

All indications is that he just missed, Chiapelli said of the driver. ---> OMG WTF!!!!!!!

Fire and rescue units quickly arrived on the scene, along with a number of State Police cruisers.

Orlando said the accident closed four toll lanes at the toll plaza. Chiapelli put the number at three.

Orlando said the authority wound up waiving tolls at two toll lanes for about an hour just to keep traffic moving through the scene.

Chiapelli said the car was owned by someone other than the deceased. He would not disclose the vehicle's owner.

Chiapelli also said the victim was apparently headed home, although the trooper said he did not know from where.

The Great Egg toll plaza was one of three parkway toll plazas in southern New Jersey to undergo major changes in 2005 to allow for one-way payment in 2006.

The changes which included the removal of some toll booths allowed for northbound motorists to pay no toll at the Great Egg toll plazas and southbound motorists to pay no toll at the Cape May toll plaza in Cape May County and New Gretna toll plaza in Burlington County.

Express E-ZPass was also installed at the Cape May toll plaza.

The work was done to improve traffic flow in the region, especially during the busy summer tourist season.

There are currently no plans to remove any more toll booths, Orlando said, adding taht accidents on the parkway like the one that occurred Thursday are very, very rare.
