girl stoned to death in Iraq .... WTF is wrong with this world?

CNN link

This article talks about a 17 year old girl stoned to death in Iraq for being seen with a man of another religion. The video is included too .... the whole thing is so disturbing and unreasonable. And her family initiated it. Seriously, what kind of climate has to exist in a place for this to happen and be considered normal and 'honorable' ? Boggles my mind.

what i find interesting is, not all, but it APPEARS (not saying it is because i dont have any real fact to base it on) that the general populace of most muslim countries are very uneducated. again this is an opinion based on what ive seen and read. not saying that it is or isnt true but that is just the way it appears.

If this is the same as the thread posted last week (why this merits two threads I don't know), then yes it was in Iraq, but no she is not Muslim, nor were the family members who initiated the stoning.

I think personally it has more to do with the fact that they're more religious than most of us and follow texts from the koran or ancient laws strictly rather than using a freedom of thought.

How can you be surprised by this kind of punishment?

It's normal in that area

freedom of thought usually only comes with people who are at the very least educated to a shitty US high school level. as i said USUALLY because there are some that need no formal education to be able to challenge the status quo.

leb: i didnt see the thread from last week so i have no clue. at least i dont remember seeing it. lol

edit//im not saying that i am "well educated" myself, but im not oblivious to the social climate of today.

The same climate that has existed around the world (and in that are in particular) for thousands of years? You seem to be under the impression that this type of behavior hasn't been around until recently. In fact, the only 'new' thing is the news coverage it's getting. This sort of punishment is wrong for obvious reasons, but it has existed in most of the world for ages. Only recently have we come to view it as wrong. So don't be surprised, and don't get all fatalistic and gloomy, this is how the human race has operated for millenia.

I knew that these (and worse) things have existed but especially seeing it like this on video strikes a nerve. When I saw it, I was disturbed enough to make this thread. I'm not surprised really (albeit it may sound like it in my first post), just pissed & baffled everytime I see anything like this.

umm last i checked the only people that have done this for the past 200 years are the muslims and associated cultures.

We execute people in the US all the time. Just because you haven't seen a video, you aren't pissed/baffled by that?

We don't execute people for exogamy though. Though I am sure Texas would, if you'd let them.

It seems so alien that this sort of thing would be worthy of death to some people. I'm sure there's even instances in the Xtian bible of this sort of thing happening and similar consequence being exacted. Like Ian said though, people there take the religious word far more literally than those of western influence.

If you ask me, this is a perfect example of what it means to be devoutly religious. Take that as you will.

Yet another reason why I hate religion.

I believe religion & evolution divides the human race into two species: One that has evolved & progressed in opening up their minds; The other stuck back in early homo sapien development & their brains can not handle modern day information. Religion is anti-progression. Those that believe in creationism have weak undeveloped minds. Those races of people are degenerates in our evolving societies.

Woman are stoned to death all over the place every day. The difference is that this is American propaganda, because no one gives a shit about someone being stoned in Africa.

Thanks for the history lesson, but it doesn't nullify a reaction of someone belonging to a different culture that doesn't have this type of violence. I dunno about you, but when I see a beheading, stoning, slicing in half, etc., I'm surprised, shocked and disgusted because in the culture I grew up in it doesn't exist. I don't think to myself, "Well gee, I guess my ancestors did it back in the day, so I shouldn't act like I'm new to this." So what if this is how the human race has operated like this for millenia? I'm sure humans have all stuck fingers up their buttholes and then smelled their fingers for a million years too. It doesn't mean that we should get used to it if we develop a cultural norm dictating that it's wrong. Both scenarios make me feel gloomy.

i really dont see your point. the thread is about the girl in iraq, if a video was psoted about a girl in africa, the reactions would be the same. plus i dont think people are unaware of what happens in africa....

well maybe there are a couple of idiots, but most poeple do know and do care.

No, they wouldn't. I haven't seen any threads about the Darfur conflict in recent history, despite 450,000 people dying there, and God knows how many human rights violations and rapes have occurred as well.

How about the trafficking of human sex slaves from Eastern Europe? And the tens of thousands of prisoners held their for political dissent of their totalitarian governments (eg Uzbekistan)? Atrocities are happening everywhere.
