Question for those who have received laptops from their Colleges

How are they normally?

I'm going to Seton Hall University, an expensive private school, and I'm supposed to be receiving my laptop late June. The computer I have currently is absolutely terrible. I don't even think it should be considered a computer to be honest. I need a much better computer to handle my gaming needs and even to do schoolwork(this doesn't even have microsoft word)

I want a good laptop, so what should I expect from SHU? An old model, or something brand new? Maybe something a year or two old? I dunno, should I look into getting my own laptop and somehow turning down theirs?

Let me know what's up yall. I want a sick laptop. Thanks yall

The laptop that I got from my university was the IBM Thinkpad T60P. Their top of the line laptop with all the options.

Some people have had problems with them, but I got a brand new laptop without any issues.

It's hit or miss, but I'd give it a shot. Then again, I'm going for a degree in software engineering, and the laptops are required.

Dont waste your parents money if you are going to a private school to play video games. Dont be a statistic for the amount of freshman that fail out.

i can't imagine they're going to give you a gaming laptop. you don't need that much power to write papers in Word, check your email, and use the internet for research. gaming should be the last concern on your mind when attending college. how about trying not to fail out your first year when you realize these aren't the same push over classes that you breezed through in high school.

Nut, that's the computer Seton Hall is giving me, and are those specs considered good?

I like how you guys are hasseling me because I'm a gamer and want a laptop that supports that. Sorry, I didn't know going to college meant I no longer allowed to enjoy my free time on the computer.

Besides, I'm getting the laptop june 25th. The semester starts in September. It's not like I'm going to be extremely busy.

Getfoul, what about the price of the laptop? How did that work out? Was it a part of the tuition, or did they add it on?

This commitment is embodied in the University's Mobile Computing Program. Because the University believes that participation in the Mobile Computing Program is vital to your academic success at the university, the program is mandatory for all full-time undergraduate students. Students are not able to opt out of the program. All full-time undergraduate students are issued a laptop and are charged the Mobile Computing Access fee."

That last sentence kinda scares me : (

There was a 3,000 dollar deposit to cover the costs if we destroy their property. We get that back at the end of the schooling. We pay like 200 a quarter for it and have the option to buy at the end of the school career for a dollar.

depending on the school and your major you may have a very different laptop from what the rest of the students get.

Ehhh... Is that how it works on the West Coast?

Laptops are pretty generic out here in NY, NY, PA, etc. 1 kind for everyone. (I may be corrected)

when i was in college i was just glad i had a computer that ran AOL and could talk on IM...

4GB memory, sweet!! I don't even think i knew anybody that had a laptop..

well i personally will be starting college this coming fall but thats what i have been told by a couple people i know..maybe they were testing a few different laptops i dont know.

i was going to say the same thing but i didn't want to be like one of those old guys who says "back in my day we didn't have crap and we liked it"

most kids in my class don't have a laptop now, its just certain schools that make you have one. I wish they would do it all over, as there are some people in college that are still scared of computers.



and playing vid games and college can work. u n00bs have been listening too your parents too much.

$3k for a deposit... Shit man, why not just spend the $3k on a bad ass laptop that you want. You can get pretty reliable laptop for $1500, I can't imagine what $3k would do for you.

I'm over here in NY. Looked into a ton of colleges. Visited SH. Didn't like what I saw or heard (from current students, at the time - they were hating, themselves). Have a few friends that go there now and are miserable.

In other words, you're paying for an education that you can get one BETTER of in a cheaper school.

What other unis accepted you?

Considering they only let their computers on the network, and they load then with all the software necessary for the courses... You also get that 3,000 back at the end.

when I when into college here in Canada they force you to use the laptop they provide for you, for security reasons they say. The were brand new top of the line when they gave it to us toshiba laptops, I was one of the lucky ones that didn't need re-imaging in the 3 years I was there. It used to run half life 2 and other games of that time no problems at all. It all depends on what the needs of your program are for us since it was engineering we had to do alot of schematics and 3D models for our circuits so that might have been the reason. At the end of the program you have the choice of buying it for a fraction of the price or giving it back and getting your deposit back, most of us returned them since they were 3 years old when we were done and you could buy something way better.
