Assailants gun down Mexican commander By OMAN NEVAREZ, Associated Press Writer

ARIZPE, Mexico - Assailants shot dead a police commander in a wealthy Monterrey suburb on Saturday, the latest in a wave of killings of law enforcement officials across Mexico.

Mario Sanchez, 47, was killed by gunmen wielding automatic rifles after he finished a night shift in San Nicolas de los Garza, one of Mexico's most affluent municipalities, Mexican media reported.

Police in Monterrey did not answer calls seeking to confirm the killing.

Gunmen linked to drug-trafficking gangs have been increasingly targeting police and soldiers as President Felipe Calderon wages a national offensive against drug cartels, who make billions of dollars smuggling cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin into the United States.

On Wednesday, a group of about 50 armed men drove into the town of Cananea, near the Sonora border, and killed five policemen and two residents.

The assailants then fled to the hills pursued by police and soldiers and sixteen assailants were killed in the ensuing gunbattles.

Sonora Gov. Eduardo Bours said authorities have received information that the assault in Cananea was "some kind of retaliation by the hit men for their betrayal by local police, implying that they had had some kind of deal."

Mexican officers often face the choice of "plomo o plata," or "silver or bullets," meaning they can either take bribes to allow traffickers to operate or risk retaliation. Drug cartels place special emphasis on killing officials who break such deals.

Meanwhile, the leader of a state investigative police team was shot and died Friday in Hermosillo, the Sonora state capital about 200 miles south of Cananea.

Hours later, gunmen also killed the chief of criminal investigations in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco, Raul Lopez Lopez.

Yeah, the situation is bad in Mexico. My uncle is Federal prosecutor and lives in Monterrey. You can't really fix the situation there. Too many of the public officials accept brides from the cartels. This commander was probably killed for some other reason than hunting down the cartel.

Anyways the situation is worse now with the Russians there. It's true. My uncle said that there is a large arms trafficking between the Russians and Mexicans. And we all know that the Russian mob is the Russian government.

And to add to that. The only way my uncle sees the cartel decreasing is by the US building a wall and adding more border agents there. Than let the American public watch what these cartel members will do to their border agents.

What's your point? You're getting a bit star-traveller-esque here. You posted an article, hurray. We have internet too. What's you're opinion on it. And no, random comments like the one on top don't cut it.

This is nothing new

The situation in the Mexican border is so bad that the Mexican government needs to send their military to restore order. I mean these thugs are better equipped than their local police, police officers are even scared to go after them. The local media cannot even inform citizens on the situation because you have these thugs intimidating them.

The new Mexican president has done some raids to stop these groups, with some success but they have a long way too go. My preoccupation is that most of these drug traffickers have created chapters in other Latin American countries, especially Central America. Shifting their violence to these Central American countries.

It's something to be aware of. That's the point.

We've got insurgents miles from our border. And don't think the cartels aren't capable of forming an alliance with Islamists against our government. There's already tunnels crossing the border.
