Paul Van Dyk Mixing Clip

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ILWNJSpEQgM

Questions:
In this video PvD releases the vinyl randomly in the middle of a phrase... but somehow it is still all phrased up with the other song....

how did he do this? is it cuz of the program?

also, i noticed when he was eqing... he twisted both mids for awhile. what is the point of this?

thanks

paulie is da man, he can do that.... lol i think its just to accentuate the bass for the few minuted he does it eq is bhuge man, always rely on it.

edit: sorry for out of topicness but i like this interview

Whoa. That looks like a really old clip.

I didn't see the vinyl "phrasing" part you mentioned. I think he kinda goes crazy on the eqs sometimes.

Some tracks have uneven numbers of bars between phrases from time to time (might be an extra bar thrown in somewhere etc), so if you know when you have to drop it so that it lines up at the right point, you might have to drop it at an odd point.

Or sometimes it's not incredibly easy to cue up the first beat for example, so you might cue up the 2nd or 3rd beat of the phrase (or any other random beat you're comfortable with), which would mean dropping it at a different time as well. I do that from time to time, it can pay to be flexible and not just feel you have to do everything as you've always been 'taught'

I cue the 5th beat up on every mix. I don't like cueing on the 1st beat due to the needle slipping etc, i find it happens a lot less on the 5th. It looks kinda weird for other DJ's watching me mix, but the phrasing all lines up perfectly so it doesn't matter in the end.

You're looking at about 2003-2004 there. Look at more videos from the user and go to part two.

I doubt it, his other movements and little bits of finger tapping seem pretty much in time

also allows for playing of effects/eqs right up to the 1st beat of the next phrase without having to start the cue track at the same time...i.e. high pass filter the bass out, drop bass back 1st beat of new phrase, than begin transition on beat 5.

you know, that would really be interesting. or maybe some tranceaddict djs, you could show us yourselves mixing. I would like to see that. I guess i could learn a lot. Or maybe just explain what you do. those things a dj can only learn from a dj.

i could post a video of me fadering and EQing during a mix, but i've only been doing it about 9 months and no offence to most people here, but i get the impression i'd get pretty slated even if it could help

Posted by miamitranceman on May-21-2007 23:49:

Yeah, I was trying to find more vids of the pros mixing from like an overhead shot or the one in this vid, but couldn't find much. Anyone have anything?
