Review: jon jon, jeff button, sean crawford & matt coleridge @ footwork

Capped off a wonderful Sat with my first visit to the footwork.

I like the venue. Nice and intimate. That spacey feeling created by the usage of lights and strobelights are good, but kinda gets annoying after a while if you keep staring at it. If it was used less, it would be much better.

Sound could have been louder... Damn you city by law cops!

Got in around 10:30 and grabbed a corner to just groove to Jeff's set. Well done sir! Nice perfect warmup. It could have used a bit more variety in the middle in terms of style, and programming did get a bit random towards the end but yeah, migraines suck dude. Good warmup prog

Jon Jon hit the decks as the place started to fill in and started off with slammer of an opening tune. Good tracklist, but programming was random. No real flow and energy level fluctuated as a result. I danced my ass off though. Tunes were that good. <3 tribalish tunes with funky vocals.

Sean Crawford was next and he played some remix of Daft Punk - Harder Faster I think. Wicked tune. He brought the level down to some dark and chuggy prog and I loved it. Had a seat on the side and bobbed my head to some proper prog.

Matt Coleridge brought the energy level down even further with some tech house. Didn't feel that at all. He gradually did try to bring the energy level up but he lost me. By that time it was like 2:30 so I bailed out.

Random thoughts
-Did anyone take pictures?
-Sean Crawford = FUBAR. Gotta love sloppy drunks. For some reason some people spin better drunk than sober though
-It's wonderful to see TAs. I gotta get to Toronto more often.
-Is it me, or is the entrance to Footwork kinda hard?
-I can only imagine how rammed this place is going to be for Liebing, and boy it was hot in there last night!
-Marg's top = teh win
-Despite what my t shirt said, I don't do shrooms

Overall: 8.5/10
Tune of the Night: Pryda - Armed

It was great night overall, nice to see Jeff and John behind decks.

I had an amazing time last night

I got their a little late, 1:30 which was extrremely unfortunate because all week i was pumped to hear Jeff's Set, damn drama.

It was actually my first time @ FW on a saturday, and i wasn't dissapointed at all. It as nicely packed by the time i got in, and the crowd was VERY friendly and outgoing.

Matt Coleridge was really good, and if im not mistaken, didnt Jeff and Jon play a couple tracks again at about 3:30ish??

Anywayz. i had a complete blast last night, the crowd was bumpin and the beatz were blastin. Awsome JOb everypne that was involved. I'll throw the pics up soon!!

it was great seeing so many faces i hadn't seen in some time - unfortunately, my migraine took over the night for me and i felt like a fucking zombie all night. even though i was feeling like shit, i still managed to have a great time. jon played a great set, and the shitshow crawford debauchery was classic (as was the random dude passed out in the dj booth, and the random people coming into the booth looking for coats/sweaters. lol)

and matt - yes, at 3:00am i came back on and dropped two tracks - then jon did the same, but i had to bounce. sorry i didn't say goodbye to many of you, the pain was intense and i had to bail.

hope everyone has a blast tonight, wherever you end up!

Sorry I let you down Yohan...

Honestly, thank you thank you thank you to all those that made it out last night. Once again, friends save the day.

Love

An absolute blast last night...

Summer has truly begun. Big smiles, great friends, tunes!!!
- no coat check in May = le ghey

- Jeff rocked. My favorite time seeing him. He has a very unique sound that im starting to really enjoy. Sorry about the headache friend, you were fab regardless.

- Jon! to cap off my Jon Jon double header weekend he played a set that had me going nonstop the entire time. I know that typically he plays more upbeat bopping/disco/latin/vocals but last night he got DIRTY. Especially towards the end. The mix of it all was perfect, at least for me. I was in heaven. Great job Jon.

- I greatly enjoyed Sean's set aswell- so talented, programming is always right on, track selection is very well thought out and appropriate. He knows what the room wants.

Great night, well done boys xo

ps. ending the night with the girls with our hands in the air and singing at the top of my lungs = priceless

I thought Jon's set was great, actually. I only caught the tail end of Jeff's (downtown traffic ), but from what I heard he was laying it down proper. Neither of the "headliners" really did it for me, I'm sorry to say.

Anyway, was great to see the two of you spin and to see so many people that I haven't gotten to speak to in ages. Glad I went, thanks for the first-rate party, and happy birthday again to all 38 people who were celebrating!

P.S. Oh, and yes, the entrace to Footwork really is retarded - I've only been there once before so it took me 10 minutes to find it, for a while I thought nobody was working the door. Couldn't they at least put an arrow on the main doors or a sign saying go around the side?

P.P.S. I'm definitely glad the sound wasn't louder - I think maybe you're going deaf, Yohan.

You know what, I'd concur. Jeff was really tight, he's really carved his sound well.

Jeff may be tight, but he is the worst DJ on the planet.

(kidding, of course)

I wasn't even going to go at first, but I'm glad I did.

Unfortunately I mnissed Jeff's set, and I've only heard Jon spin a handful of times, but I would defeinitely say it was one of my favorite times hearing him. As Hil said...it was just dirty.

Jon - do you have a tracklist by any chance? Or remember the last or second last song you played? I wish I could sing it to you right now haha b/c I don't really know how to explain it. It kinda had a rolling base line.

Lisa, I think youre talking about "Give it to me" by Nelly Furtado, Timberland and JT - I dont know the mix of it though

did it have any vocals?

I just really went for a jon jon fix and as usual it was great. I just really like your style, good job. See ya at Hotel.

P.S.

As I told you after your set, you have a new admirer...

:P

I had a really fun night. Total randomness to decide to come last minute, and had no idea I'd see so many familiar faces
Glad I came, Sean, nice to meet you dude, same with the Wiz (don't remember your name ). Can see myself spending more nights at Footwork when I finally move to Toronto in a couple weeks

I'd have to agree with what others have said (not quoted) that Jeff was tight. I thought it was a great warmup, the place wasn't very busy, and it suited the place great. I'd have to 100% disagree on the randomness.

Hmm, "no real flow" and "energy fluctuated as a result", yet you danced your ass off? That doesn't add up. I haven't been out to see Jon in a while, and I thought it was great, far beyond what I remember from months ago (style wise), which I said to him when he finished. That place was moving from to start to finish. Jon has always been very good at programming, which I can appreciate without having to like the style. This time I thoroughly enjoyed both, and I'd say the rest of Footwork did too.

As for Sean and Matt, I wasn't paying attention, got distracted, sorry. lol

If you're talking about the song I private messaged you about - that very well could be it. Jon, what mix of this did you play?

The song I'm talking about in the thread is different though.

No vocals. It was right near the end of your set.

Poor choice of words perhaps, but then again, English has never been my strong point.

matt took a handful of pics (thanks!)

I went and had a pretty good time

I remembering thinking that jon jon was dropping some pretty good party tunes (well, as much as that means w/ my limited house music knowledge)

great sets you guys, jon jon and jeff.

me and the lil G left around 2am (apparently right around the time Lars, Dee and Carns got there, total bummer) and so we missed the 2 track encores yall did before shuttin' her down.

was nice seeing everyone out, esp for more intimate events like these with friends on the decks.

I was able to catch the tail end of Jeff's set..

My purpose for this was to catch jon jon. My schedule never seems to work with when he is playing so I was happy it finally did.

jon jon plays my kind of tunes.. While I am not all that up on the technicalities.. he played fun party tunes that had the floor moving.

I left right after he finished up.. so I can't comment on the others. By all accounts it appears I caught the highlight of the night and that works with me.
