[Prog] Downtown Tropics (192 kbs)

I know it's been a while, but that's because I have been composing a lot of non-trance lately. I thought I'd experiment with something prog, and I came up with this:

It's smooth, somewhat minimal, and low-tone.

Really soft and nice! That float synth is very beauty! Just one thing: I think the effect you use for example 1:09 is cool but a bit overused. Anyway, I enjoyed! Well done!

Commenting as I listen

As you say, your going for a minimal-sounding track so I'm not going to lecture you on the opening. Personally, I'd stick some more FX in the opening perc sequence to create some more variation. As the track progresses, I'm liking the variation developing.

Kick and Bass sound sweet together. Interchange between guitar sounding pluck and the other synth. Takes me back a little to my casio keyboard days. The sounds used are very thin sounding but it fits in this track.

Your Harmonics are very good in this one, and it's clear your delve into other genre's have helped in that respect.

Very good. I'm liking the chord progression after the build-up.
Really good stuff B-Man. Not my preferred kind of trance so I'm sorry I can't offer a more critical narrative on your piece.

Keep up the good work

Thanks for the feedback. To be honest, this isn't my preferred form of trance either... I just enjoy pushing my genre limits. In many regards, prog is growing on me by the minute...

You say the sounds are thin, and I have to agree. I suppose I was caught up in making sure the sounds fit together. I've tried to teach myself to sacrifice individual sound schemes for the whole, but not always succeeded. Your comment confirmed this.

The overused effect just fit... so I made it so.

This is cool. The melody progression is excellent. I think you should work on this some more, maybe add some thick atmospheric pads towards the end to fill out the track and give it sort of a climax?
But it is cool as it is, very relaxing.

i like the melodys, and like some of the pads but the guitar does sound casio, and the reverb on the hi hat or maybe just the hihat itself doesnt seemto fit very well, breakdown sequence is pretty cool. seems like it has alot of psy influence.

like the kick and bass.

sounds a bit like older prog with the minimal sound you have going on.

melodies arent really infectious but they flow well with the track.

nice fx used.

i think you could use some saws in there somewhere to give it a bit of life.

im no expert on prog though and nice listen all the same.

keep it up

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I agree about the guitar comments, now that I listen to the guitar lines without having heard the track in a while. You see, I really want to have more organic instruments in my projects, but I really have to rely on these CRAPPY soundfonts to get the job done and my ten fingers. Yeah, that acoustic guitar killed this track.

@ sterilis

The plucky lead had some "saw" in there, but I mixed the oscillators enough to get something that I thought was a tad more original.

One thing this track taught me... it is possible for me to produce a track without piano lines, or saw leads.

nice intro i like those percussions, the bassline fits nicely..

though you had some nice percussions at the start you seem to be afraid of overusing them? the piano a like lead sound nice but a bit plain at the same time, maybe have a vst running along with the same melody to fill it up a bit, i like the melody... wow panflute? my all time fav instrument didnt expect that in this tune, sounds good really like it.

overall a nice tune, but dont be afraid to use more percussions

cheers and thanks for the review!

kick is deep, but does it reverb a little ?

*srry my bad

nice bass/rythm combo! it's hard to pull of for me

nice light plucks! very soothing and calm.

thin glass pad, put to great use!

nice fx in the break

flute sounds nice, though a bit synthish

the melodies sound really good, bt theyre not something you would remember when you come home from your local lounge. I don't think you put alot of effort into making that happen though, and just made a nice simple yet beautiful melodie to "just" sway along.

more percussions would do better indeed , and more panning!

This sounds like Psy Full on with a lower BPM, above all the plucked synth, reminds me of Protoculture sound, I like the sidechained pad, the guitar melodie sounds too improvisated for my taste.
The overall tune it feels a bit empty, you need more percussions, and Fx&Delay, adding the drive to the sound.
The break is really nice, that flute creates a really sweet athmosphere, but again I feel a lack of elements on it.
In overall, this has potential for to be a really really good progressive tune, but it lacks of Percussions, Delays, etc, in a single word, it lacks of more Production, melodies are sweet.
Work it out more, make it fuller, I am positive this could be a great track in some time, with more work and above all experience in the progy production .
