sE Electronics Reflexion Filter for Vocal recording?

Im interested in improving my vocal recordings. Since my studio gear is housed in a small sized appartment I thought this "Reflexion Filter" thingy looked somewhat interesting and its quite cheap too. Also got a quite nice review from SOS (http://www.seelectronics.com/revpdf...S_sE_REV_RF.pdf)

Anyone got some experience from it?

Fail.

Get two slabs of rockwool, make two frames, stick the rockwool in and put a hinge in the middle. $100AUD ($75USD?) and will work way better.

The end result should be the equivalent of this...

Gonna do some more research on the topic before i decide what to go for. A homebuilt solution is quite appealing, but the problem is to make it look nice, since its supposed to be located inside a appartment and eventho its portable I know im lazy so the construction will probably spend most of it time on display instead of inside a closet. Also I wondering abit how to mount the rockwool frames around the microphone on something like a mic stand.

Really, 1cm of absorbing foam surrounded by a metal cage is a bit of a joke, it's not going to absorb anything. Infact, the metal cage colours the tits out of the recording. Furthermore, the Reflexion Filter is way too small for what it aims to do AND although it attaches straight onto your mic stand, you have to sandbag the base of the stand or it will just fall over from the weight of it.

The real traps one is by far the best. You can't even compare the two! I haven't used one personally, but it is made in a similar way as their other products, so I know this is the ideal way to attack the problem. However, a home made solution using rockwool and open frames would do the exact same thing... seeing as thats fundamentally all the real traps are.

I was planning on making mine floor standing, so I can record at all different heights without having to fiddle around with it. Probably a better way, however, is to make a basic wooden brace between the two panels which has a hole in it. Then you can feed the telescoping part of your mic stand through that hole and put a clamp below it to stop it from falling down.

I've got to ask, have you tried the Reflexion ? Where did you get the info on the "the metal cage colours the tits out of the recording" ?

I admit the real traps one does look better on paper at least !

Yep, they had them at a store here. I didn't do an in depth explorationg (), but basically even the guys at the shop were saying it was a waste of money.

I remember, the real traps site has a comparison where you can hear the difference between untreated room, reflexion filter, and their own product. Ethan Winner is a pretty moral kind of guy, basically the king of the accoustics industry, so I think they're reliable.
