Question for you minimal heads out there....

Why do you like minimal? What makes it so good? I know I can ask this in the MD forum, but I don't check it at all and I wanted a local opinion on it.

From the live sets I've listened to (especially Hawtin), I honestly can't get myself into the minimal bandwagon at all.

edit: I'm also up for suggestions for other artists or live sets worth listening to

I think it has something to do with all the Nintendo & Sega games we played when we were little kids. We spent hours listening to repeative simple electronic rhythms. Hearing them again as young adults, brings back happy memories

pure minimal/detroit sounds like hawtin, luciano, villalobos blablabla is imo totally not made for homelistening imo. i myself even cant have it all day @ home, and i am pretty nuts about it. i enjoy it very much in "good" clubs tho, and it just totally works for me live and really blows you away under right conditions. ofcourse it depends alot on your taste too...

dont trade this with more electro- or techhouse genre.
it often sounds alike and djs like sasha, digweed or vth often mix it alot with proper minimal and lot of other house genres which makes it way more enjoyable for homelistening/live variety imo than the typical click-clack-minimal

I like minimal but only in small doses.....I can't listen to an entire set of minimal or it will drive me insane. Like Robbie said, it's good when mixed in with electro/tech/house to break up the set. Lawler is the perfect example of what I'm talking about.....the way he has been programming his sets with massive build ups, heavy bass lines, and twisted minimal is mental. I've noticed other DJ's starting to touch on the minimal side of things lately as well like Desyn.....so far I'm liking what I hear.

I think hearing minimal on anything but a great system is a waste. The music has such subtle intensity, that you really need to hear it in the right environment. Musically, in my opinion, it's somewhat challenging to play properly because the sounds are so abstract and spaced. That said, I don't see myself playing any full on minimal sets soon, but it definitely gets mixed in at times.

I cant listen to a set on ny ipod, but live Richie, Nic, and James just bring this energy taht u dont see with other genres, it has to be experienced live in color as far im concerned, its not like house and tarnce where you want to listen to the songs 100's of times, but when your there you feed off teh DJ's energy

+1, you have to hear minimal on a nasty sound system, Cielo... also, I can only really get into it during day parties for some reason, ala Sunday School, Nocturnal Terrace...

Sets are very tough to get into when listening at home though, some good 'minimalish' type DJs are Gaiser, Gui Boretto, Radioslave, and Loco Dice IMO.

i agree. didnt really see what the big fuss was over minimal, even when i gave it a chance and downloaded a bunch of sets. only recently got to hear it on a big soundsystem and started to notice the subtleties and the buildups..still dunno if i could listen to hours of the stuff but i definitely appreciate it a lot more.

then again, im probably fortunate to have had someone like richie spin the first minimal set i heard live..he turned the dancefloor into a pressure cooker, just building and building the intensity and unleashing massive basslines on the crowd

i really hate this question. you either like it or not. and the term "minimal" is so over-used today.

i only thing i can say is give it a chance - go to some events and see what you like and don't like. it's as easy as that.

its sounds really good on k. like trance sounds really good on e.

when lawler plays minimal he re-edits them tho right?

I like to listen to minimal when I'm cooking like umek, adam beyer or Marko Nastic.

I enjoy minimal for a lot of different reasons. I enjoy mixing it because it is a lot more of a challenge for me then any of the other EDM genres. The tracks have a lot more going on and allow you to be totally creative with the mixes. I simply got bored of mixing trance and house. I think it was a cross of mixing minimal and listening to it in other dj sets that really got me cought up with it. At that point I basically cought an ear for it and began to enjoy listening to it everywhere. But like already said, there are a lot of elements that run through these tracks that can only be heard and appreciated more by listening to them on a great sound system. Seeing Lawler last year just opened me up completely to the music because the tracks just felt like they exploded and the sounds were just bouncing all over the room.

If you have seen or heard any of my recent dj sets you can still hear that I have that trance influence in the minimal I play though. Shonky, for example, is a producer that I really enjoy because there is very nice melody in the minimal tracks he produces. So I like to mix it up a bit so it isn't "tick tock" all the way through the set. Which by the way, isn't such a bad thing to listen to either. I've heard a lot of those sets live and was still blown away.

some of it can be cool (and at certain times/ conditions) but i would be pissed if it was 2am in a big room full of people and the DJ is playing something that sounds like a stopwatch with a bassline at 127bpm. Buzzkill

But what if that bassline just rolled so deep that you got this crazy feeling running through your spine that worked to your legs and made you stomp the floor harder then ever. And the stop watch sound was surrounded by these undescribable melodies that seemed to bounce from one corner of the room to the next all while there is this creaping "woosh" that began to build from absolutely nothing until it got so massive it just exploded at the last possible second before the entire track just came together with all of the sounds chugging along together as if a new track was mixed in but wasn't.

i would go to the bar for a drink

dont get me wrong, some if it is cool but i dont see myself wanting to experience it during main hours. I want something with a little more kick. maybe afterhours or after afterhours

I'll have to agree with most people here that minimal is definitely best on a big sound system. It really caught my ear when I heard it for the first time at a Digweed set in the Guvernment arena... HUUUGE space and a MASSIVE sound system! It's all about the subtleties and bass thumping build ups. Outside of the club I can only really listen to specific kinds of minimal, and in headphones only. I need lots of bass.

I have to say I still consider myself fairly new to it. I have more minimal vinyl than I do mp3's and mixes so recommendations are always welcome.

I can definitely agree with you Digweed plays it really well.

ROFL! good one...
but i think tolerance is the key (just as everywhere else too btw ;-)

plus imo if minimal works or not (interaction with crowd etc) depends HEAVILY on the location too, i am not to common with the nyc club scene yet (this will change soon tho) but i am sure there are alot of clubs, lounges where casual or even formal dresscode is required. or where the interior design is way to glamouros to make such sound work straight. it must have definitly a at least slightly industrial background to really dance ur ass of...
can be a personal thing only tho

anyway, if the dj programs a "trip" which uses every reasonable genre (house, techno, progressive, minimal, electro, techhouse blabla) and shows sophisticated versatility to take away his crowd, imo that is what rocks most.

Posted by PvDoBseSSioN on May-24-2007 19:20:

i like it because its different and it sounds phenomenal, it can be really good or really crappy and boring tho, like hawtin for example... he can be playing really good stuff or just bleeps and a bass line here and there which can make it really boring

so it can be good or bad depending on the set, overall tho its good music

He plays it here and there in his sets. But Digweed has been known to mix a lot of different sounds in his sets all while making it sound amazing.
