Angry Tipping: When and when not to?

A few weekends ago I was at this club and ordered a drink. After I paid for it, the girl said: What about my tip? I told her sorry no. Besides I had paid for my friend's cover earlier that night and needed the remaining money to pay for parking. She caught an attitude and told me never to order another drink from her again. Another one of these episodes occured at this other club I went to except the girl didn't get mad. She was walking around selling shots at $3 a piece when they actually cost $2. When I asked her why the price, she said it was for her tips. Needless to say I got the shot from some other girl.

I always thought it was the customer's discretion to tip or not and not a required action. The only time I tip is when a service was being rendered. For example a waiter at a restaurant or someone going out of their way to make a pizza/chinese/food delivery, you know what I mean? But never a club. If it was that difficult for the poor girl to pour me a drink I would have done it myself. It is the equivalent of buying a drink at a convenience store, except that the cashier is not a pretty girl and I'm not being poured anything. You guys don't go around tipping cashiers am I right?

Do you guys agree?

I always tip. I'm a good tipper, people love me.

Posted by Boomer187 on May-26-2007 00:12:

i always tip, and tip almost everyone. However if its shitty service they get tiny tip and and a snarl. good service = good tip which = continued good service.

Posted by Sushipunk on May-26-2007 00:13:

Dunno. Here in Australia hardly anyone tips, ever. It's really not customary.

When i go out to a club, a good portion of my money spent is on tips.

it's bad form not to tip, but it's worse for someone to ask for one, imo.

Posted by igottaknow on May-26-2007 00:24:

i tip but i don't like doing it. i don't like being shamed into doing something

i love the bathroom attendants who expect money for giving me a paper towell that is usually soaked already. I only tip if they hold it.

That's all I'm saying. It's up to the consumer not the seller.

Wow really? I never knew that. I thought they get paid a regular amount per hour like everybody else.

nah. Same with any job for which tips are common (waiter, caddy, valet, etc.)

You're comparing me to a slaveowner and the bartender as my slave. That really is a poor analogy since I'm not forcing her to do anything or depriving her of any personal freedoms.

If that really was what Al Sharpton said then I disagree with the guy.

well honestly i'm not sure as i've never bartended, but i assume it's like being a waiter or waitress...the majority of their pay is tips...i would assume bartenders are the same...

the only problem i have with that is that their base salary is no different from a waitress, so they should only get 15% and a dollar a drink is way more than that. does popping the top off a bottle of beer constitute a 25-33% tip?

maybe, but do you really wanna ask for a quarter back?

besides, 15% is skimping.

i guess that's my cash policy. if i go up and buy a drink with cash i just drop a buck. if i have a tab...it might be a little different...

i don't ask for a quarter back either and your seen to be a cheapskate if you don't leave a dollar. but why is it accepted to leave 15% for a waitress but not for a bartender? Waitress does more work to earn that tip. think about it, sets the table, asks you if your ready to order, comes back if your not, takes your order, refill water/coffee, brings you your food and drink, checks on you, takes the check, cleans the table. compare that to what a bartender does.

well, a bartender's probably just as busy, if not moreso--they just don't do as much per customer, but, then again, the 15% is coming out of a much smaller amount than a bill for dinner. Also, it's the whole atmosphere of a club or bar, as opposed to a restaurant. It's more carefree, and people treat their money the same way.

Posted by Ygrene on May-26-2007 00:50:

I tip like its going out of style. I tip a dollar per drink for every drink. If I buy a round, same rule applies. For restaurants I usually tip 25% unless service is poor. For other services, like helping with luggage, valet, taxi its usually 5 bucks minimum.

I'm pretty independent so when people basically wait on me, I view it as a personal favor, so I don't mind rewarding.

Posted by igottaknow on May-26-2007 00:58:

I resent being obligated to overpay for a service. A vending machine could do a more efficient job of giving me a bottle of beer. Tipping is one step removed from prostitution. Like the bigger tip I give you the more your supposed to pretend you like me. Gives me a strange fake feeling. like I'm bribing you to be my friend.

The ppl doing the tipping don't do it because of the great service, they just want to appear magnanimous or they're being shamed into it. In my eyes its a disingenuous ritual required by society.
