Review: Hawtin & Magda @ The Mod Club ..05.25.2007..

what a blast..the choons were great.. magda really set the mood for hawtin... he was totally into it.. wasnt feelin that well.. left at around 2... seeing everyone out was awesome..cribby, ilovemeinc, dj sketchbag, endlesswave, rj & marg, jon jon, val, nathan, simon, jason, etc etc... was good times... next up boat cruise on sunday woot woot!

i dont know if i want to see hawtin again after tonight... disappointing really..

Magda rocked.

Hawtin was awesome...and had potential to be the set of the year, but his last hour was filled with so many fuck ups, and he brought the set to unenjoyable levels of nothing but buildups....and he finished early.

That had SO much potential, I've never seen a bottom fall out of a party as hard as that one did.

I'm still standing there in shock horror when this bouncer decides to first push me from behind (I fly a good 5 feet almost landing on my face) then when I manage to stop myself from falling he punches me in the side of the head. (it wasn't like a proper punch to my face, I dodged it and he pretty much hit the side of my head)

I'm like "whoa buddy wtf", he then continues with "get the fuck out get the fuck out" and basically shoved me out the door.

WTF?!?! that kinda behavior is fuckin disgusting.

These bouncers need to understand that its the clubbers that pay the bills, and their paycheques.

I think taking it up with the club is a VERY good idea, thats just plain rude and unacceptable.

That is pretty bad, no one should deserve that. What's going on with bouncers in Toronto these days? Last week at Freedom, I was lucky enough to get into that 20 person guestlist or however many people it was that was cut from the actual guestlist line. It was basically just to move things along and I was in the club no more than 5 mins after. Unfortunately, Mahan (m2j) and some of his friends didn't get in till about 30 mins after... but I sent a txt saying to meet where the coat check was on the walk way to the Guv main entrance.

So I wait there for all of 90 secs before a bouncer comes and tells everyone to move out of that area. Fair enough, I can understand the disaster outside so I move into the mainroom. A girl wearing high heels slips, falls and (assumingly) breaks her ankle before the door of the main room. She's in tears from the embarrassment/pain. What does the bouncer do? Get a wheelchair? Help her up? HE PUSHES HER IN THE MAIN ROOM WITH HIS LEG! I could not believe it, it really pissed me off at the time and I'm pretty sure whatever male she was with had a go at the bouncer.

I am not sure but every time I read reviews for Richie, they are not good. Is his name more popular then the music. Last year, I went to see him at a DEMF afterparty, and he was dissapointing. It was so bad, that after about an hour into his set, some people were shouting "Boring!!!" .

I'm glad I didn't go.

lol yeah I'm fine, what makes it even more ridiculous is that I spent most of the night bragging about how amazing the venue/ staff is...

But Richie Hawtin tho? lol Someone please explain to me what the fuck that last 40 mins was... He trainwrecks for about 15 mins straight, he lets two songs run out completely (rather than mix into), he played one song with the mixer effect on FOR THE WHOLE SONG (it was like 7 mins of flanger), and he played his last song at volume level 2 and at 3:40am (still with 20 VERY valuable mins left to this party) he brings the volume down to zero on his last track and then PROCEEDS to take FUCKING PICTURES with people. BAHAH HONESTLY WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT...

Random. Perhaps the bouncer interpreted your "what the fuck is going on with Richie" face, as you giving him The Evil Eye. Or a Hairy Eyeball. Or Cut Eye. You know what I mean. Regardless man, that is definitely a shit way to end an evening. I hope you bit his ankle or something.

On a similar note, last week a fight broke out in the middle of the danceloor at TIL during Luke Fair's set. Fist flying everywhere and bouncers escalating things to a level that seemed totally unnecessary. So annoying. And a total buzzkill.

Have short skirts and warm weather increased the testosterone levels in the city?

wow that sounds like a crazy nite! and to think i was pissed all nite being stuck at til and wanted to go to mod club. glad i didnt waste the money!

i agree with jonjon, that really ruined everything
he fucked up about 10 to 15 mixes last night and i was there for less than 2 hours lol
just when i got there the party was rockin, sick tunes, about 25min after it just became a buildup after buildup, i could only hear bass, why is there fucking bass in the first place, i thought it was minimal, then the endless effects and fuck, i tried getting into it but it just did not happen, at some points i saw everyone standing and not realizing wtf is going on. And come on, hes supposed to play til 4am, i thought he was going to play even longer but no, 3:28 he closes his laptop and practically turns off the sound lol, wtf? everyone screaming shouting and he puts one more song on less than half the volume, it was a good track though but 5min later he does the same thing and packs his shit up.

Crowd was one of the worst though, almost everyone was fucked on something. When i was going i knew what to expect and everyone knows i don't get bothered by that shit but it was to the point of ridiculous, i think i saw more sketchy people than i did at CZ both sunday and last monday, and everyone walking into your dancing space, falling on you, pushing you and showing you to get through when there's clearly enough space to walk and dance. One guy pushed me out of my space and started smoking a joint right in front of my face, a bouncer told him to put it out and get out, he was given a warning, after 2min he lights it again and gets caught again, seriously what a fucking moron.

Jonjon that same bouncer kicked us out when we tried to walk up to the stage, he didnt even ask us to leave and started pushing us out, like wtf, there was like 40 people at the stage, why the fuck do you need to push us out, whatever he's a fucking dumbass. I didn't take it seriously until you pointed it out to me that it was the same guy

anyways i give this night a 5/10, 5 for a good company of people i was with cribby/rj/margaret/jonjon and for a few tunes that richie did drop, other than that meh..

Man, this guy is lucky Rambambi wasn't there...things could have gotten ugly...

Guess I'll be the odd one out and say that I had an AMAZING time.

I really liked Magdas set, but thought Hawtin was great. Played more on the clubbier-side of things with some really great drummy tracks, love how he tweaked around with Ambivalent RU Ok - its not too often I'll get sucked up into lots of builds/breaks, but when they are done right they are great, and found myself hooting hollaring and cheering.

I stayed near the front most of the night and from that perspective, it seemed like everyone around me was dancing for the most part.

I didnt have any issues with bouncers, and while I did get elbowed in the face once - meh, such is life. I'd rather have a slightly sloppy but enthusiastic crowed than a room full of chin-strokers.

understandably getting punched in the face will ruin a night... that really sucks dude... other than that unfortunate incident though, im really surprised at all the bad reviews.

i heard a couple trainwrecks near the end, but i thought richies set was great. i had a blast. loved the clicks and pops, soo groovy... he dropped some abstract 'warpy' shit near the end that was interesting. the chuggy basslines were sick, especially being so close to the speakers

it would've been nice if the party went a bit later but i was getting tired anyway.

i finally got to see a dj that ive been meaning to see for a while and wasnt disappointed.
