Native Instruments Massive

God damn, I finally discovered this thing, can't believe I never gave it a try but it is by far my favorite synth right now, such versatility.

Anyone else use this? It's bananas.

anyways, i use it for a lot of things... on my last track i used it on top of a bassline for some great movement.... it's dreamy, its stabby, it's dirty, it's got a great amount of overtones and not THAT big of a CPU hog.

massive, blue, predator and albino(god i love rob papen) seem to be my go to's for everything right now(and my virus ti, duh)

Tried it, too much cpu , i'll wait till my e6600 to test it

I'm selling mine as well as fm8, and absynth 3. NI is a top collection but it definitely doesn't match my requirements when it comes to cpu usage. Plus, now with Live racks, I haven't been using them for more than 6 months. I'd better reinvest the money into new plugins or controllers

Interested? mail me.

Youre selling some plugins because they use too much CPU... yet you use Ableton? lol.

Sorry, had to explain. Massive is a HOG, it uses 30% CPU at least with 3 or 4 note on messages, which makes it unusable during my live shows (too risky). And I can simply make any kind of patch with live racks now, as I have sampler and operator options. So I just keep plug-ins that I effectively use. I have EI2XT too that's for sale, incompatible with mac intel.

Sounds like you already made up your mind, but to everyone else who has massive, get the upgrade and set the quality setting to an appropriate level for your computer. It helps a bit. Also, were yo saying that FM8 uses a lot of CPU for you?? I don't find that at all... Although I do have a pretty decent computer I guess.

I can't help believing airwave has a decent one too

Lol, there are a few options here, the first of which is that this was a totally random comment, the second being that I was just talking to airwave... And knowing this forum and the trance scene in general, thats actually possible In which case, I would have to congratulate him for a great album in trilogique (which was the last release of his I picked up) and tell him to keep up the good work

macbook core duo 2ghz, an axiom keyboard, and m-audio bx-5's @ home, and mdr7506 headphones on the go.

FM8 is quite decent but I can easily get the same results with operator for what I want, so it's quite redundant.

Never tried Massive, guess I should. It gets mentioned a lot around here. I see there's a demo. I'm sure it has something I can use. About every VSTi I try offers something unique. I haven't even gotten into the FM8 yet.

Hah, well now I can see why your replacing FM8 with operator, I personally found it too hard to use, but I can see how someone with more experience could make it work

My computer's a 2.26 or something, and I don't play live, which probably explains why I'm not too bothered about massive being a massive CPU hog, a few clicks and crackles arent a problem when its only you listening after all. So your going to be using just Operator and Sampler live Lolo? I'd be curious to know whether you found a CPU reduction from that, do you find it helps?

Anyway, Massive's pretty great, but I actually prefer FM8/Absynth/Pro 53 for the stuff I do, I'm no great programmer though so I'm sure you can get equal results out of all of them. FM8 just seems to sit really well in a mix for me, I don't know why exactly.

Posted by Lolo on Jun-04-2007 09:29:

it's simple, once I press a note in fm8, I get like 6 or 7% cpu and its architecture is great but a little too complicated to program, while operator is 4 osc for 4%, but I reckon without built-in fx. And you gotta know, I haven't been using factory presets for a while. I hate that. Operator is a swiss army knife, it has everything I need at my fingertips in a snap. So why bother.

As for Sampler, the big thing about it is that you can important ALL EXS files, including garageband's jam packs without having to rely on something like cdxtract. This with a way better RAM handling. And sampler is simply incredible compared to EXS24's interface when you make multisamples on your own.

Ah and I sold my logic pro 7, but I still have one for sale (my colleague's in fact), for those interested...

The only thing that I wouldn't sell now is my copy of Reason 3, because although it's quite redundant too, it's nice having the choice of a different vibe sometimes, and Reason has a decent vocoder. Those using cubase and fruityloops on the same machine can tell, I guess.

The only improvement I'd love to see in the rewire protocol is the send of audio data to the slave then sent back to the master, so I would spare some time having to transfer a file to NN-XT just for a vocoder fx. One day will come, hopefully...

Oh OK, I see what you mean, programming FM8 is hard, good to know I'm not the only one who has trouble with that I guess if operator does what you want then FM8 is overkill. I never used EXS24 so I can't comment on that, but having all your plugins in one system (and window) has to count for something I guess!

Reason never worked for me, same as you, I found that it was just unworkable for anything to do with audio, and I am a vocalist to start, so that's no good for me! Sounds like a cool setup you got now though!

fm8 is fantastic, and programming it isnt hard, you need to have alot of patience in the beginning to figure out how everything works and after that making patches will be easy.
i love it, fm synthesis is very flexible, you can make any sound you have in your head!
