Blu-ray & HD-DVD
Has anyone taken the plunge and gone with one of these formats, or both?
Does HD really make a huge difference from DVD? Is the viewing experience remarkably improved? And worth it?
Saw quite alot of BR/HD DVDs on sale today and it got me thinking. Thoughts / experiences would be appreciated.

I'm sure by now many of you have heard why Betamax died vs VHS. Porn. I'm calling Blu-ray as the one in the end that will dominate. Just like Betamax Vs VHS, the porn industry will decide the winner and since porn is going Blu-ray only and with Blu-ray having the larger capacity, if I had to buy a player I'd go the Blu-ray route.
I am still going to wait to get an HD player until this is resolved, but I did see that LG now has an DH and Blu Ray player all in one.
Yeah, but read the reviews on the LG player. You don't get any HD-DVD extra features enabled, among other things. Not worth it IMO.
I got both and now I can watch a regular DVD. There is significant difference between the two!
I could really careless which format wins as both of my players are video systems (360 & PS3). But wow, don't start watching movies in HD if you can't afford to completely shift over.
oh, btw...where did you hear about Blu-Ray being the only format for Porn?
There are tons of HD DVD porn already out there, and initially Sony stated that there was going to be no Porn at all on Blu-Ray. Unless they changed their minds in the last month.
But I don't think Porn has that kind of impact anymore. Everything is digital and all of it is downloaded. Sure back when it was VHS vs. Beta, it was based on the Porn industry but that was because it was not available on the internet like it is today. I personally don't believe it will have as big of an impact as in the previous format war.
hover your mouse on the LOTR pics below to see the difference between the two

huh/??
the porn industry chose HD-DVD!! and that was a while ago.
Also HD-DVD is much cheaper to produce than the blurays.
not to be an idiot, but you need the monitor to max out the quality. i wouldnt even consider the change without a 1080, ive seen it in person and while impressive, isnt so much from 10 feet away without a high quality tv|
I bought the HD drive for my 360 and can notice a slight difference between regular DVDs run on progressive scan, and DVD. Then again my TV is only 32" and 1080i. I think you'd need a larger TV running 1080p to notice a huge difference. perhaps if I were using the HDMI cable it would be a lot better, but I'm not sure.
I think the rental stores will decide which format is going to prevail, somewhat. Whichever format is most accessible to rent is what people will switch to.
I've been seeing commercial of movie releases ONLY on Blu-ray, lately. Is this significant?
I dont think porn will decide what format wins this time.
When VHS and Beta was battling it out there was no real way to find porn other from magazines. But now there is porn on VHS, DVD, magazines and foremost online - porn wont decide this war.
If HD-DVDs or Blue-Ray players can make it to the $499 mark I think it would be something worth considering, but $999 ($1,000 basically)...is excessive for something just to watch movies..unless it's a Blue-Ray-RW drive, where you can copy 50gb worth of files! Good way to back up your files (but an external HD drive is way more practical). I would be curious to find out when games and other software will start to come on Blue-Ray for PC....those should be quite graphically intensive (why they would need all that space on the disc).

Triple layer HD-DVDs have just been approved. 51 GB
The consumer doesnt care about if a disc can store 50GB or 50TB, its up to what the movie companies does with it and what companies stand behind what format. If techies keep jerking off to specs then we aint gonna get nowhere.
