yeah, the UN is definetely run by America. that's why the UN supported the war on Iraq
Despite the fact that you got to this conclusion for all the wrong reasons:
Here here! Off with the UN! We need it no more!
I actually agree with you'll here no place for this corrupt organization anymore.

| Originally posted by Magnetonium Its true. I long ago realized thaT UN is just an American tool. And the things that it does according to US wishes and with disregard to other nations is appalling. UN has failed many times to stop genocides, aggression of countries like US, etc. etc. It is just a place where leaders chill together and pretend like they're doing something. Its just a big show. Those who are not in it are not missing out on much |
NATO is pretty much like UN too these days.. both need to shut down.

I love the way nobody on this forum actually seems to know what the UN is, what it does and how it operates!
It seems everybody on here thinks the UN is just a security organisation when its not. It's simply an institution that allows nations to come together and reach agreements on how to act in the international arena. It does not have an army but it can legitimise the use of force, but the UN is so much more than that. It has departments for legal affairs, political affairs, humanitarian affairs, economic affairs, social affairs, disarmament, human rights, children's affairs, refugee affairs, drugs and crimes, maritime affairs, and the list goes on, and yes it does include peace and security affairs but as you can see that is only a small section of what the UN is responsible for and the fact that people on here only seem to know about the UN's security aspects suggests they don't know very much at all about the UN and probably are not in the best position to comment on it's relevance. The UN only gets mentioned in the press about security because they are the "good/entertaining" stories, and that is why people on here are under the misguided opinion the UN is all about security.
As for who has power in the UN for security (as that is what everyone here seems to be basing their opinions on) well it's quite simple - America, France, UK, China and Russia have the power as they are the permanent representatives on the Security Council. But their power lies in blocking the UN and not allowing it to operate efficiently (or how people on here would like it to act, ie sanctioning the war in Iraq). When just one of the Security Council members oppose an action then it will not happen, simple as. So if you want to find blame for the UN's inefficiency in security issues blame the individual members who oppose the action.
And on the subject of military strength, the UN has no army. If we want to send troops to Sudan then we need a strong military, and currently only America or NATO has the sufficient strength to mount large scale peace-enforcing operations and America (and therefore NATO) are rather reluctant to send troops anywhere where they don't have policy interests. That is why the UN normally only mounts peace-keeping operations with a limited mandate, usually staffed by troops from the smaller European armies, which usually means the "UN" is very limited in it's capacity to effect change and hence the accusations the "UN" is ineffective.
The simple fact is that we live in a global, interdependent world and we need the UN's vital institutions to shape the way nations interact with each other to prevent conflict and anarchy.
