the death of vinyl

been hearing it , been seeing it too, friends who had stores are no more...Sam The Record Man will be gone by month's end...2thebeat is gone also...it seems that downloadable content is here to stay...what to do with my thousands of records? hehehehe. ps..apple's itunes is now drm free(like that stopped me b4!!!)

There are still a very few DJs who still use all vinyl. One of my good friends is one of them. Carrying his bag into a club for a gig = needing physical therapy the next day + maximum strength pain killers.

its ncie to see when djs still use vinyl....but its just too much work.

they won't "die" but they will stop manufacturing them. over head is too high and demand is too low. it's just not worth it financially. i was reading and interesting article last year about how the companies that manufacture certain chemicals needed for the prodcution of vinyl records are going to discontinue them due to lack of demand. They estimated this to happen around 2009.

Thank god CD technology improved, or otherwise the death of vinyl would have been very painful on the ears. Vinyl still sounds better than even the best CD recording on a CDJ 1000, but the difference is not what it used to be...so convenience wins without having to give up too much sound quality...

CDJs will die farily soon too, IMO...I give them 5 years or so...I see everything running off computers with CdJ or vinyl turntables as the front end i.e. Serrato, Abbleton etc. Its already changing very quickly, although there is almost nothing as boring as watching a DJ spin off a laptop, not very engaging.

Someone has to create a flat laptop so there isn't a screen between the DJ and audience.

this whole laptop thing totally backwards imo.
its far too much trouble lugging that shit around to clubs and dealing with plugging it in, etc.

the future will be simply mixers capable of accepting flashdrive or usb inputs(or even bluetooth shit from headphones) whereupon the mixer itself will reside the file directory. djs just flip through that with the touch of a finger, and select tracks, as well as select cue point and loops visually(and with a touch to indicate where).

the fx adds on will be available but they won't be too popular. just like now.

i'd be surprised if it ended up being anything but the above.

that said, i still play some records simply because its far easier to do so than cds in some cases.

i very highly disagree...i think that its kind of different....as big computers evolve into laptops....record players evolved into cdjs...not cdjs evolving into a computers....or just having computers and no cdjs....Up can comming djs still want that dj feel of spinning a record...even tho its a cd....otherwise the technology is already available to just run it off computers, but people still buy cdjs, and even record players....

I think I may have misled by saying CDJs are going to die...I meant CDs will...CDJs and vinyl turntables will survive as "toggle switches" for mixing off software like Final Scratch and Serrato...everyone will carry around there storage medium (likely flash cards or the like), and plug in to the system...you will technically be still "spinning"...

Reality is, software allows you to do a lot more (effects, sampling, and organization of tracks) that CDs and vinyl by themselves hinder...especially the part about accessing tracks quickly and efficiently and being able to plan your set better or act rapidly to randomly mix, whichever...

laptop seems to be a lot more complicated than using cdjs and cds

perhaps mp3 cds/cdjs will be in 5 years down the road

this is exactly what i'm suggesting, tho its the dj who would carry around a memory stick of their tunes rather than cds at all.
the stick goes in a mixer input slot, and dial up tunes from the entire memory stick via a touch screen interface.
i'm surprised no one has come up with this yet.

and you could even have a virtual face board for which you could select any number of traditional mixer faces. like a pioneer 800? traditional Bozak? scratch mixer? np.

and to the last poster - cdjs currently do already support mp3 playback.

Moby played all old records.

he also said that the only reason he was playing records was because he hasn't learned how to use CDJs.
