Review - Miss Nine at The boom Boom Room Windsor

Very rare do i feel the need to write a proper review, alas today i must. Don't think there were any TA's that made the trip down as Miss Nine is a relative unknown as compared to Ferry who was in toronto. Also im writing this from a dj's perspective and not that of an owner/promoter.

Leading up to the night i had talked to some djs in the know as what to expect, about 95% of them said the same thing.. gimick gimick gimick... needless to say i was concerned.

After what I went thru last year with Peter Hook i had every reason to be concerened. The room had about 150 people in at about midnight, which for the size was good, not packed but not empty either. Kristen came on at about 12:30 to nearly a full room, now there was no cover charge so we did have some people in there that had no idea what was going on, just some super hot dj behind the decks.

First 2 traks were kind of a train wreck, and the volume was kind of low and i was a bit dismayed as sweat was dripping down my forehead again with visions of Peter Hook dancing in my head. Here we go again i thought, so i stepped up to the booth and turned up the volume on the amps to compensate, sound was good. Then i noticed something ...sweat was dripping from her forehead too? She was working, no really working slowly but shurly she made magic happen, track after track the crowd was getting more and more into it, no more hic ups either. She kept working and working .. not drinking not smiling at the crowd waving but really working, blending 3 cdjs and an efx 500. Impressive to see a dj work. After a 2.5 hour set and 2 encores everyone stuck around till the end. Seems as if ali and sharam have taught her well.

In short after what seems to me as a bit winded, here it is She was wicked, and there's no gimmick here at all. Great and organized track selection 8.0 in mixing skills and terrific vibe. People just loved it. No topless dj here... all heart and soul definetly a woman dj to look up to for other aspiring female dj's. Especially with the buragge of agents trying to push topless dj's these days i get at least 3 a week via email..what a joke.

All this and only 23 years old. LOOK OUT Magda, Mistress barberea etc etc. There's a new Queen of the decks looking for her crown.

Dont let the looks fool you, she can drop....

and yah shes quite the looker too.

When's she coming to T.O next? I missed her the last time she came...I think it was a bigger event...I always try to support female DJ's especially ones that can actually spin.

revival; thanks for posting that review; word on the streets was gimmick gimmick as well, and it is indeed a very pleasant surprise to see her actually get by on her 'skills' instead of her 'sets' Based on your review, I think i'd be interested to chk her out sometime now, when/if she comes to the t.dot.

And yes, she is the looker, isn't she? haha

I'm not surprised. She rocked it at last year's labour of love.

Definitely not a 'gimmick' - unfortunately a lot of female acts out there use their looks (or tits) to get them some unwarranted publicity, but this girl just flat out knows good music.

I look forward to seeing her play in Toronto next time she's here - hopefully in a good venue (for her music)
