Big Ears ReFx nexus: Any Good?hs

Hey guys, I was just looking around to see if any of the latest softsynths are any good. One of them that came to mind was ReFx nexus. Anyone have some feedback on it or recommend any new top softsynths?

Isnt Nexus a rompler, not a synth?

A rompler is a synth but a synth isn't always a rompler

@ ezra, why don't you download the demo and try it for yourself?

No it isnt.

yes it is! A synth is anything that produces sound synthetically, hence the name. So a sampler is in fact a type of synth, and romplers as well.

If you wanna get technical, you can define a synth as a device that is in some way able to generate and alter sound, via filtering on something like that. So a straight-up tape recorder isn't a synth, but add a filter and some envelopes (like Nexus) and you have yourself a bona fide synthesizer

....at least that's how I'd define it

Anyways, Nexus is great, but you can't edit and save presets which really sucks balls!

Isn't it like a 1gb demo or something stupid?

Anyways, checked it out, and meh, not impressed.

I agree with you Rusty, it's not all that impressive for the price. Nothing you can't do with some synth work.

i only use nexus and i highly recommend it

So Kontakt is a synth too? An Akai is a synth as well? An MPC is a synth?

I maintain that, unless it generates (aka synthesises) its own sound, rather than playing back samples, its not a synth...

Nexus is awesome, all the big producers use it, even Jarre

It's a rompler with synth engine.

Thats right, kontakt is a synth and akai S series too. MPC not quite I think it has only phrase sampling? It's more like a sequencing workstation with some sampling possibilities (not too sure though).

These are sampler synths pure sang, a sampler synth with onboard samples = rompler

But hey okay you are right, all other people are wrong, now maybe try to get back on topic. (something you might have done in the first place instead of trying to be the smart guy )

Nexus is definitely NOT a synth - it's a sample playback device with minimal control and no editing capabilities.

Technically, Kontakt and Akai series samplers aren't synths either, although they can be used as synths since they share a lot of the same functions and controls.
I believe a synthesizer has to have at least one (built-in) sound generator (oscillator), and while you can load a simple waveform into a sampler and essentially turn it into a "synth", an actual synthesizer with built in oscillators would be much more efficient when it comes to sound design.

quote:
Synthesizer as used in music, is a term derived from a Greek word syntithetai < synthesis (συντίθεται < σύνθεσις and is being used to describe a device capable of generating and/or manipulating electronic signals for use in music creation, recording and performance.

In other words, a synth is anything which is capable of "generating and/or manipulating". Hence, when you play a drum straight through battery, it is being sampled - nothing has been "generated" per se`. When you play a drum through battery with the envelope changed it is synthesized. The distinction is that something new has been made (something new has been SYNTHESIZED). Definition of synthesized: "commonly understood to be an integration of two or more pre-existing elements which results in a new creation".

Anyway... Does it really matter?
