LUKE FAIR - "Balance 011" @ Sullivan Room, June 16th / INTERVIEW + CONTEST

On Saturday June 16th People NYC & KGB join forces to bring you very special guest LUKE FAIR, touring in support of his new mix CD "Balance 11".

In a few short years, Luke Fair has carved quite a reputation for himself as a producer and passionately experimental DJ, making him the perfect choice to follow others such as James Holden, Chris Fortier, Phil K, Paolo Mojo, Desyn Masiello, Anthony Pappa and Jimmy Van M. He has already released mix compilations on well-respected labels Yoshitoshi and Bedrock, with music that can be described as groovy, funky, housey and techy all at the same time. Fair has created a signature style for himself by imagining and re-editing versions of songs for his own sets. In the studio, his genre-crossing productions run the gamut from Dub House to melodic Progressive. His music has landed on every major radio show across the world, including BBCs Radio 1 Essential Mix and Proton Radio, and his edits have graced the decks with DJs from everybody from John Digweed to Erick Morillo.

The Balance series has firmly established itself as one of the top choices for discerning music lovers who have a taste for cutting-edge music mixed by the worlds best, but not always recognized, DJs. Balance 011 will only serve to prove this once again, as Luke Fair grabs listeners with his diverse music and takes us on a funky, tripped-out journey featuring tracks and remixes from Charles Webster, Humate, Timewriter, Francois K, Ian Pooley, Tom Middleton, David Holmes, Joey Negro and more.

How was it? We had a graduation party in Jersey that didn't get done until late and it was after midnight before we got back to our place so we opted out

had a great time last night, got there around 11 and took advantage of the 2 for 1 drinks, luke came on around 1 and played til about 4am. he dropped a really great set, awesome energy and progression all night long, and the crowd was loving every minute of it. place wasn't too packed but still crowded enough to have a great vibe all night which was nice.

some tracks:
Alexander Kowalski - She's Worth It
Elektrochemie LK - Lay Here
KLMNT - Zouin (Tiger Stripes Mix)
Schwab - DJs in a Row (Tom Middleton Cosmos Dub)
Bioground - Smooth Summer Nights
Bent - Waiting for You (Danny Howells Edit)
Sebastian Leger - Cosmonite

overall a great party, would definitely love to see him come around again.

I generally had a good time, but damn I felt there was way too much soulless, bland, booty electrohouse in the first half.

It felt like two luke fairs where there. For a while there was a tag team thing going on and luke was playing bald and I wasn't digging it at all, and I felt like a lot of people were just dealing with it because they wanted to keep up the facade of enjoyment to please the opposite sex. Luke was very active behind the decks, and I thought the mixing was as shady as the tracks.

Then something changed. He started playing some funkier, groovier, deeper records, which pleased me greatly, and then he put his balance hat on (literally) and seemed to get really serious about mixing, and actually didn't react very much at all to the music and was just sort of fiendishly mixing records. I thought the music got very good here for a while. Some wonderfully deep, dark piano stabs and beautiful basslines, etc Then luke decided to end the set and started playing a couple good after-peak bittersweet records, but i felt that this whole affair dragged on way too long and where a few of these records would have ended the night nicely, it seemed to get sappier and sappier and i just had to take a seat until he finished. He left and then another guy got up and played a random but entertaining set and then at 5 did an abrupt backspin and the lights came on and we left.

i think you might be talkin bout one of the two openers that preceded him? they were tag teaming from when i got there til just after 1am..and one of the dudes was bald and definitely goin wild behind the decks to some generic electro housey sounding stuff. first track that luke dropped was the same as the one from his set @ Club Belaya Veja this year back in February, dont think its been IDed though..

edit - or it was just my mental state
