I'm a big fan of oakey's. The thing I love about his sets is that they have the depth of say...Sasha or Digweed, but it still has a "trance" feeling to it... It DOES make me wanna dance, though nut as much as Tiesto does.

I think Oakie's technique is very good, much better than your average world class ( well you know what I mean) DJ, and his sets are very well built, IE he doesn't just play popular tracks in a random order, but the nusic reeeeeeely developes gradually.

(I also love Tiesto, it mostly comes down to which mood I am in. Sometimes I wanna listen to Oakey, sometimes to tijs, and at other times I listen to other stuff)

Oakey is unique in his own way because of his song selection... A lot of his sets consists of classic trance, house, techno tracks which I am dying to lay my hands on. And of course, also the way he mix all of them in.

I agree that his sets are not intense, but in his sets, he creates a journey, and by the end of the set, you'll either like it or hate it. I hated his set here in Toronto when he played at the CNE stadium for thousands of audience. This particular set sucked big time for me because he turned up the bass so damn bloody loud that I can hear nothing but BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. Then about 2 hours into the set, I could finally made out one song, solar stone - seven cities.

Oh well, after listening to all his live sets is enough to drive me a bit insane. Despite his lousy set (in my opinion) at CNE, he managed to pull a wonderful set at World Electronic Music Festival. I wasn't there but heard the real audio (it is also on napster.) So there.... He is still da man...

Ugg . . . I have to say that I was really let down by Paul Oakenfold when I heard him spin live. If you wanna check out my in-depth commentarty go to the rave/party section and check out the topic Oakey and Chicane in Melbourne

I know there's a love/hate thing going on with Paul Oakenfold, but my beloved Oakey will always be a favourite, I started getting into trance bigtime when he was the man of trance... the first tracks you hear of any new music you begin to listen to (and end up really liking)will always be memorable, and for me it was oakenfold who played them.. err like pvd vs tilt's rendezvous.. gamemaster, cafe del mar.. I heard these songs because oakey played them (not that others didn't)... when I saw him live (that is when I lost a bit of my hearing standing next to those big ass speakers) he smiled so much and shook everyone's hand and seemed so down to earth, so no matter what peeps say I will like him.. I think some of us outgrew his style a bit.. still tho the first of everything is always special.. right?????

Hey everyone.....

Both times that I have seen Oakenfold...in Canada...he blew. Plain and simple. He wasn't into his set, at WEMF 2000 he would simply drop a track...and then walk a few feet behind him to talk to some girl. I think the funniest thing during his set at Connected last year was when someone winged a glowstick at him. I do give him credit though, he has done a lot for the music...and his live sets from Gatecrasher/Norway that I have heard are pretty good. I guess he doesn't like us over here ?

Peace,
Steve

I agree with live4trance, as much as I like Oakey, his set at Connected wasn't as good as ones I heard him do elsewhere in the world... I remember walking to the house and techno area before his set was out...hehe now I'm contradicting my self!!! I still like the guy, so there!!!

hahahahha ... somebody threw a glowstick at him???? hahahahahha. No seriously, I think that any DJ should either try their best or not play at all. Stop wasting our money and time!!! Punishment should involve taking them out back and bombarding them with glowsticks

I saw people throw glostix at him but I think he just took it as a gesture of people liking what he was doing...

I saw him at Rave on the Rocks in CO last summer. Really what I remember about Oakey live WAS him mixing a track, talking to somebody, then fiddling with something, then talking to somebody, then mixing a track, etc. He went on last, fired up the big lasers and it was journey time. Everyone loved it tho. As opposed to Static Revenger, who was constantly fiddling, Oakey wasn't. But I thot it was more due to experience, plus I didn't care, it was Oakenfold. Hey even Carl Cox has said that he PRETENDS to fool with stuff, even tho he isn't doing anything, just cause the crowd likes it. Personally, I don't care either way... Another reason everyone loves Oakenfold is because he always seems to spin what will be popular now.peAce.

Anyone know if he will be spinning in Southern California? thanks

You know, I think that's the main reason why I don't really like oakenfold anymore. I don't want him to spin what he thinks is popular or what everyone wants to hear. I want him to spin what HE thinks is new, cutting edge, and good. I don't want to wait until a song becomes established and overplayed before a DJ spins it. Because really, what skill is there in playing a song that is tried and tested to be well received by crowd?

Posted by biznology on Dec-03-2000 22:55:

Yeah sorry about that wording, I know what you mean and I think that is true. When I saw him in Colorado I had just learned about trance thru Mars & Mystre's "Faith in 2000" disc, and "tranceport." Say what you will about oakey, but he didn't play one tune from "tranceport" or "essential selection". Most of his stuff WAS the slower, vocally influenced style on "another World." Besides, what on "Another World" is an overplayed anthem?
I guess you could claim the Blade Runner stuff.

Thumbs up

I don't know...despite everything the scene wouldn't be where it is right now without people like oakenfold...he was the person that got me into trance and i think that it is sometimes silly to be critiquing a DJ of his stature if you haven't been djing as long as he has...everyone has different DJ...no matter what i will always like Paul Oakenfold...obviously there will be other DJs...i mean i love Tiesto, Jean, PVD, M&M, Armin, Sasha, Digweed etc but you have to admit their is only one god of electronica...secondly his set at Nocturnal Wonderland, CA was awesome...he played the best anthems...on that note...who cares if anthems are overplayed, its because they are good...you obviously wouldn't want them overplaying bad tunes over and over again...i also heard he was in Socal at some downtown LA club in November...heard that was really good too...don't know when he will be here next...but i definitely can't wait...well that's my 2 cents

Come on guys, who doesn't like hearing a few familiar tunes in dj sets, as long as they're good ofcourse!! Oakenfold would be stupid if he played all popular tracks and I do believe he plays some interesting stuff that I don't hear other people play sometimes.. as for taking over america, there's plenty of other people who want to do well there, we never know anyone's true intention.. I want to believe that good djs play it for the love of it, and most probably do but who knows what else is going through their minds, I dunno we're humans, once we get a little taste of success, we crave more..

I just hate people who stop liking djs, artists whatever just because they aren't "in style" anymore, if you don't like the guy that's fine but don't say it because it's suddenly "not cool" to like him anymore..

I don't mean to sound like a friggin saint btw...
