This is actually a good tax. I don't know many people who drive into manhattan during that time anyway, and the proceeds are going to be used to help with mass transit infrastructure, namely building train stations.

we actually need a more integrated and extensive mass transit system. Any tax that actually improves mass transit is something i am for, as should all people.

For those who don't use the system, and think a tax on them is unfair, that's BS. The societal costs associated with cars are much greater than any tax that benefits mass transit. These costs include, pollution, cost of road maintenance (which is taken from the treasury which everyone pays into), cost of policing the roads, and dare i say the Mid east issue.

LOL
That doesnt work without the , , , , , , , , or smileys

Although on the plus side you dont have red ken (livingstone-evil mayor of london) to screw it up, squander the cash and not fulfill any of the promises that were made about it, then increase the size of the zone, and increase the cost down the line..... plenty more examples, but I will cut short this mini rant now...
Give it time though- I am sure someone will copy his example.

come on m8..i'm a Londoner through and through and you can't tell me that the congestion charge hasn't benefited my beloved town..It's a beautiful thing when you can spend an extra hour in bed because the roads in the city are empty...

I value your opinion whilst rejecting anyone elses that has never been there

Posted by AY STAR on Jun-14-2007 21:26:

iam 50/50 for it
traffic in the city is out of control
it takes 30 min to cross town from the linchon tunnel to the midtown
back in the days of robert moses he wanted to build a highway that would connect the 2 would have been a pretty good idea but shit happens
and 2nd ave is a mess
but 8 bucks is a lil too much
wat if you gotta go into the city then leave but then wanna go back?
u gotta pay again crazy
and as for that money goin towards helpin improve mass transit?
wat about now the mta wanna increase their own fares to $2.50 by 2009 or 2010
so now we gotta pay more to go into manhattan and also to use the subway? bullshit
ill put you guys on to somethin
i used to work for mta bridges and tunnels
in 2005 they grossed 1.2 billion dollors
and my uncle works in matience on the battery tunnel
and i have friends still at the midtown tunnel
and they said it only takes about 300 to 350 mill a year to run all the bridges and tunnels thats salarys and matinence
the rest is profit and that goes towards other mta projects "supposedly" but who knows where the money goes
but somethin has to be done with traffic i just dont want the hard workin citizen haveing to break his check for it

I'm a londoner too.. well not any more, but born and bred there.
I cant see how it has benefitted it. That comes from my perspective as both a driver and a user of the tube.

Angel - zone 1... pretty central

hand on heart, traffic to me seems worse since the charge was introduced-especially going through the west end (knightsbridge - picadilly-trafalgar sq at any time is hell on earth now) where traffic light timings have been changed seemingly to cause congestion and slow peoples journey down.

Im not one to criticize for the sake of it... but I genuinely fail to see much difference, apart from making people cough up an extortionate amount on top of crazy levels of council tax, road tax and petrol duty.

whatever tolls you would pay to enter manhattan would go towards the $8 fee.

what do global warming and terrorism have to do with taxing cars to rid the city of congestion and help build 3 or 4 LIRR/Metro North stations???

and NYC is far from pure socialism. The hallmark of socialism is the redistribution of wealth. NYC has some of the greatest gaps in wealth equality. Notice the difference between Park ave in the 70s and Park Ave in the South Bronx. That is evidence that socialism is not nearly as prevalent as you think.

Taxation is the foundation of government; it couldn't exist without it. And life certainly wouldn't be better without government.
