I am screwd

Here is the story:

I was booked last week "through a friend" to play a house set (tonight 9PM) at a large private pool party.

The girl that organizes the event called me today to ask about the outs on my mixer...so we chatted and 5 minutes and a few "what?" later the reality hits me hard; its a hip hop crowd. She only wants a few "techno" songs here and there...

My library contains mybe 100-200 songs from last year...

I NEED YOUR HELP. If anyone can spare a few songs or mixes that are hot atm I will be indefinatly thankfull.

I have until 7:30-8PM MAX to load it up on my notebook

shame on me for not keeping up to date with the hip hop dancehall music...

It's 1AM over here...so...how'd it go?

Frankly if I was you I would have told the girl that I couldn't prepare for an all Hip-Hop set on such short notice, and that she'll either have to accept my playlist or hire someone else.

thats exactly how i feel as well. There have been occasions where I was booked for killer events and they asked me to play something other than house or any form of edm. Not to bring up ethics (well I guess i am) but personally, I became a DJ for love of the music, not for anything else and every time situations such as these happen, I'm reminded of this. So I guess its just a matter of opinion.

I have always noticed when I tell people I'm a nightclub dj that they all of a sudden think I'm a mobile dj. I think a lot of people in this hobby have been in the same situation.

I got a phone call once from a family friend asking be to DJ a birthday party and they were insulted when I gave them the number of a good mobile DJ that I know. I had to explain to them that that I don't play the hokey pokey. I tried to explain that you wouldn't have a foot doctor do brain surgery would you? They couldn't grasp the concept of specialization.

Hope you had luck oh well.

So true. That's why its good to have a couple of mobile DJ contacts to help you out in situations like these.

It went ok I guess. I was able to get some club stuff at the last second. Not my greatest night.

I gotta say I dislike mixing (read: cutting) hip hop.

From a technical perspective I did some novice mistakes in the beginning (anxiety) then 1 drink later and my friends smiles got me going... it was pretty good afterwards, I really got the crowd going and even managed to mix in some sinclar, axwell, angello every now and then.

From a personal perspective...I have a hard time with commercial hip hop so saying I had a blast would be a lie. But I did enjoy the night for various factors irrelevant to music or djing.

buttom line: always speak with the promoter/organizer directly (and from day 1) when getting booked to avoid unnecessary stress

It is basically the same as any other type of music. Except you can use more cuts.

Haha.

This keeps happening to me too. I got asked to DJ a 60th birthday, with all music provided, for like $500. What the hell is the point? You may as well load up a CD stacker/iPod and press play.

A lot of people at my regular workplace also ask me what my "DJing outfit" is, and what I say when I get on the microphone. I'm a fucking DJ, not an MC or a clown. Old people with no idea are funny.

Just play house and if any of them ask for hip-hop give a nice big "Fuck You" to them by playing Window licker by Aphex Twin.

I hope you went.

Lets not play superhero djs here. You're paid to make the crowd dance. Or overpaid in your case...

Just make sure you play the video somehow...and hope no one has a gun!

Beat Blog: I get a bit of that too, but thankfully most of the local mobile DJs are professional enough to not rely on gimmicks. What I do get a lot of is people asking about my use of the microphone. To a lot of people, the DJ's talking is the defining "skill" of DJing, not the mixing.

Just be careful that you know how to speak in a microphone well when being booked for weddings and such.

phrasing in hip hop is simple

mixes usually only last around 30 seconds

hip hop is all about knowing your bpms and track selection
