GAME CUBE vs. PLAY STATION 2

which is better?

Posted by Freeza on Apr-14-2002 05:02:

Playstation 2

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Apr-14-2002 06:17:

Graphics- Gamecube
Sound- Gamecube
Gameplay- PS2 <-This is where it's all at!

I'd pick PS2 because not only does it have all the great PS2 games, it also can play the huge amount of excellent PSone games. Although that new Resident Evil remake for GCN looks promising...

Posted by Agent_WD40 on Apr-14-2002 09:53:

PS2 all the way. Both are cool but PS2 is backed by way more companies and has so many more good games.

Posted by Shoes on Apr-14-2002 13:00:

GameCube. Easily. All the PS2 really has going for it is GTA3.

Posted by Nook on Apr-14-2002 15:42:

King

ps2, without a doubt

well what do you want?
ps2 has a DVD player you can use, if you can plug it straight into a TV(so no VCR plug in). ps2 has all the best games right now(plenty more than JUST GTA3). ps2 costs about 300, but it is believed the price will drop to at least 250 or possibly 200.

the GC has several ok games right now...nothing rediculously special. it has NO DVD player - tho this makes it cheaper. it has better graphics than ps2. and it has nintendos backing, meaning it will have some badass games on it. i heard the controller is the shit too. this is cheaper than the ps2, but im not sure how much...the ps2 price drop could depend on whether nintendo wants to make the GC cheaper i think...late/

No, Sony has decided that they're going to keep the price @ $300 but they're going to add the hard drive and modem to it, bundled in the package...while the people that own one already have to dish out another $100+ to obtain those items

I've almost got $1000 invested in my PS2

The GameCube controller is better than the PS2's, but, if you feel that it isn't (for some insane reason) there's an adaptor to make PS2 pads work on the GC. Result!

There's also a USB adapter for the PC that allows you to use the Playstation controller on your computer. And there's another adapter for XBox that allows you to do the same. The PS controller is considered the best controller ever designed...I think the GCN controller is more confortable but the PS controller has better button placement.

well i just read somewhere they integrated the CPU more fully making the price cheaper...i also heard that shit about the hard drive and broadband tho...i dunno what will happen. imo they may make a lower price version, and an online version. and even if they include the harddrive, they will still dump the old ones at a lower price...maybe/

i think the PS2 has better graphics.. most of the GC games as soo 'comicy' if you know what i mean.. the way it looks is like a cartoon

Have you seen pics of the new Resident Evil remake for GCN yet?

well if you are only looking at kiddie games thats one thing. as for 'comicy', i dunno what that means - cel shading games gives 3d titles a comic book look, and i think thats awesome. games like Luigis Mansion just wouldnt do the machine justice.

i dunno whats comic like about those, Star Wars looks great. And check out the water in RE!

as for 'comicy' - Automodellista...(ps2)

LoL, leave Automodellista alone...that's the style of graphics called "cel shading" and it's becoming pretty popular these days so get used to it. That should be a pretty good game, a cartoonish version of Gran Turismo

im not making fun...simply comparing. Automodellista looks like it will be awesome! i can get down with FULLY customizable cars (bodykits, paint, engines) even if its cel shaded...looks cool. and its online! late/

ok, i am singling this out out.. look at it. It looks like a cartoon. Seriously, the sky is flat (no banding like it is supposed to) and even the turrents on the AT-ST walkers look 'painted on'. I have been playing bond, and even that game looks like a cartoon.

I am not trying to dis the GC, I like Bond a lot (beat it earlier today), but I am saying that i prefer the way the PS2 games look, since I find that they have a generally more realistic color scheme, geometry to them. I can see the picture of auto... but it is MEANT to look like a cartoon, unlike the GC Star Wars game.

I hope you understand my point, even if you do not see it the same way. As with many things, this is a personal preference and I am trying to rationalize it as much as possible.

Posted by TeKnoHe@d2025 on Apr-15-2002 02:32:

btw, here are some more screenshots of RE...I don't think that one biznology posted showed the graphics enough:

4.30.02 I can't wait (more pics here: http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filter...35836-1,00.html)

I have yet to see this level of realism in ANY game to date...

Posted by drizzt81 on Apr-15-2002 04:23:

wow..
now that is a BIG argument..

i am impressed.

God knows how that looks like a cartoon. It just looks like StarWars.

Bond, well, that was on the PS2 first, and it has simply been ported over, so it looks exactly the same as it did on Sony's machine.

It's a fact that GameCube can do better graphics than the PS2. It's better all round, actually. The PS2 is two years old. The GameCube is about 6 months old. It's just natural progression.

As for controllers, well, it's your hand's choice, I suppose

I'm not answering this...I regged at a gaming forum (IGN Boards) before my music addiction surpassed my gaming addiction (which is now very small). Threads like this were like Southern Sun threads in the Music Discussion forum...people would start flaming, stupid fanboys saying "pS2 rocks!!1!1!111!! GAY-cube is for kiddies!!" and "Gamecube is the best! Its all about the fun in games!!". Both are quite ignorant and stupid. I used to be pro-Nintendo, but then I sat down with the PSX for a while, and realized there's some really good shit on it. Right now, I could easily argue both ways, PS2 is better/GC is better.

It really boils down to the games you prefer. And, this is why I'm not buying any more consoles, cause I like games on all 3 consoles (xbox included). PlayStation 2 has its share of really good games. Gamecube, although doesn't have as many good titles, it will have lots by years end. Xbox, has a few, and really, this is the only console I would easily label as 3rd best.

As for technical things, such as graphics and sound. Well, depends really on the developer, and how well they know the console. Theoretically, GC and Xbox are the 2 most powerful, equally. But, look at MGS2 for PS2, for example. It looks better than majority of GC's games (Rogue Leader and RE 1 are the only 2 that smoke it, in terms of gfx). As for sound...boils right back down to the developer. And the controller...the GC wins hands down.

Oh, and the names are single words: Gamecube and PlayStation, not Game Cube and Play Station 2

Good titles both consloes are, in my opinion:
PlayStation 2:

  1. Metal Gear Solid 2
  2. Silent Hill 2
  3. Grand Theft Auto 3
  4. Gran Turismo 3
  5. Final Fantasy 10 and 11
  6. Virtua Figher 4

Gamecube:

  1. Rogue Leader
  2. Resident Evil series (coming soon )
  3. Eternal Darkness
  4. new Zelda
  5. Too Human
  6. Perfect Dark 0/2 (whatever it turns out to be called)
  7. Conkers Other Bad Day
  8. Metroid Prime

A bunch of those aren't out yet, and even unannounced...but they're coming, and they will be HUGE.

I know there's some titles that I forgot to mention, simply because I'm out of the gaming loop right now.

Ok, these types of comments would get you a massive amount of flames...simply becuase, it does seem like an ignorant comment. But, I know what you mean and, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the consoles power, but the style that the artists use. Just like those RE1 screenshots you've witnessed...graphic STYLE has nothing to do with the system power. They can go for a realistic look, or a more "cartoony" look as you put it (otherwise known as cel-shading)...and as for Rogue Leader...man, for a game that came out with the system, it looks damn good, don't you think?

And here's some nicer screens of Rogue Leader

Edit: I just read over all the posts, and, one thing I would like to mention. In Rogue Leader, all the 3d looking stuff (check out that pic of the AT-AT's Biz posted), thats all geometry. Its not a 3d model with simple textures. All the indentations in the legs, head, gun...its all 3D geometry.
