What tracks should I spin at a high school party?

I've been invited to play at a party next week. Most of the audience will be high schoolers. What kind of tracks should I play? I normally spin trance and electro house. I know that high schoolers normally listen to what's on the radio, which I really don't follow. I'm thinking of playing remixes of top40 songs and mix in some progressive at one point. I don't think I should spin any sort of house, but IDK.

Play the following:

01. Robert Miles - Children
02. Darude - Sandstorm
03. Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
04. Robert Miles vs. Darude - Children of the Sandstorm
05. Ian van Miles - Children in the Castle
06. Ian van Darude - Sandstorm the Castle!

Repeat as necessary and you'll be golden.

Edit: Seriously though, Top 40 =\

maybe some jay-z and richboy? are these high schoolers edm fans, or just the usual teenagers? if the latter, then top 40... sadly.

Posted by Cro_Addict on Jun-18-2007 21:42:

expect ALOT of top40 requests...and i mean ALOT!

Good Luck

Someone had a thread around here that had a tracklist he played for a high school. It was 80% all remixes of top40 songs.

That's what I'm assuming. The host (it's his birthday) likes EDM, but I doubt that the other do.

Well that changes everything.

If he's into EDM, and it's his birthday (and given that there will be substances consumed), play stuff he'll dig, and get everyone else into it once they're all fucked up on whatever sorts of Wine Coolers and candied liquors you young folks are digging these days.

Good luck.

Lol, didn't mean for it to sound so condescending

I still say bang out the EDM and find some way to soil the kids parents bedroom before the night is out.

This thread's been done before. Play whatever, and fuck them. See how far that gets you.

it's the damndest thing, highschoolers.

back when i was in HS, i could play any type of track, trying to get them to dance, and at best, i had people standing around the decks, telling me i was doing a good job, and staring.

i kept getting requests from people who liked EDM to play at their bdays and such, even if the crowd didn't like it. i normally declined, but sometimes, they'd insist so much, saying to do it for them, just cuz it was their bday, that i couldn't refuse. normally ended up in fucking sucky nights.

on the other hand, this one time, i took my decks with me to school. had music class that day, and the teacher asked the students involved with music to do a jam session, somehow. i played some more bare-bones tracks, that were mostly beats/percussion, and had a friend play piano over it, another did bass, another violin, etc. some of it sounded ok, other not so much, but it was fun.

anyway, i basically didn't go to class for that day. right after music, which was first hour, i went to an empty classroom, plugged my shit in, and i had taken some speakers from the school PA. i could make a nice amount of noise, as the nearest busy classroom on the floor was far off. at one point, after recess, a bunch of students rushed in, following the sound as they were walking by, most were classmates of mine. they just wandered in, and began to dance. i was playing tracks specifically for my hearing pleasure, and continued to do so for the following 20 minutes, until teachers got pissed and raided the party and sent everyone to class.

so, anyways, expect it to suck.

Educate the kids so you wont have this problem. Invite them all to your house and put a bowl of weed in the middle of the floor with a bong.

I got everybody hooked on house around here

Posted by Inertia on Jun-19-2007 02:25:

the problem is, most aren't worth educating.

What is with all of the spam posts recently?

There were some threads about this recently, so I'm just going to re-post what I said there. Good luck, and if the going gets really bad give them a big "fuck you" with Aphex Twin - Windowlicker!

Yeah, its hard to find Top40 stuff on Beatport. Most of the Top40 remixes that I find are on Perfect Beat, but I would check iTunes also.

As for who remixes them, Junior Vasquez and Tony Moran are the big names, but there are also companies like Ultimix/Funky Mix and Promo Only that put out exclusive remixes. I personally go for Gomi, E-Smoove, or Lenny B remixes.

Some Top40 remixes that I've done well with:

Pussycatdolls - Dont Cha (Kaskade Mix)
Justin Timberlake - My Love (Paul Oakenfold Mix)(yes...he's now remixing Top40...)
Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (Basement Jaxx Vocal Mix)
(also check out the 'Acid Dub'. Killer tune!)
Mary J Blige - Be Without You (Promo Only Remix)
Madonna - Sorry (PSB Maxi-Mix)

This one is well-known but by a different crowd:
Cast Of Rent - Seasons Of Love (Gomi's Lair Mix)

First get those who like pop trance, chemical brothers or the like, and show them haw much deeper the EDM rabbit hole goes, usually it works well.
Then find those who are just listening to rap because everyone else is. They're also easy.

Posted by Inertia on Jun-20-2007 06:52:

yeah, but generally these people are so devoid of personality or character that it doesn't really inspire me to want to put any effort into it, specially when they aren't necessarily people i enjoy being around.

furthermore, nothing pisses me off more than when i get a person to enjoy great music, and they piss it all away.

ie. back when i was 16, i already knew my way around the local clubscene, enough to get myself into most clubs without problems. i had made a friend from school start listening to house, got him to listen to Steve Lawler, made arrangements for when Lawler came to play, got us both in the club, and even managed to meet up with Steve and get pics and autographs. my friend hung his autograph on a wall.

a few months later he takes it down, and puts up a crappy reggaeton guy's autograph he got. i asked him why not keep Steve's up, to which he replied that that guy was cooler.

NEVAR AGAIN!
