"The politics of partisanship and the resulting inaction and excuses have paralyzed decision-making, primarily at the federal level, and the big issues of the day are not being addressed, leaving our future in jeopardy," he said in a speech Monday at the start of a University of Southern California conference about the advantages of nonpartisan governing. Throughout his 5 1/2 years as mayor, Bloomberg has often been at odds with his party and President Bush. He supports gay marriage, abortion rights, gun control and stem cell research, and raised property taxes to help solve a fiscal crisis after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But he never seemed willing to part with the GOP completely, raising money for the 2004 presidential convention and contributing to Bush and other Republican candidates. Just last year, he told a group of Manhattan Republicans about his run for mayor: "I couldn't be prouder to run on the Republican ticket and be a Republican."

I hope Bloomberg runs for president. He'll throw the whole race upside down next year.

He was never a part of the Republican party to begin with. The only reason he became a Republican was to win an election (which is weird cause New York City is a largely Democratic area but most Republicans that do win in that area are more liberal or moderate). He was a life-long democrat, it says that in a lot of the articles about him. Kind of amazed that he didn't just switch back to being a Democrat, but hey..we need more third party candidates.

Some guy on this forum recently asked me why I think there's no diversity in the US.
The example of a two-party system is a great example of that.

Standing for one's convictions and going against what one knows to be wrong... we should see more of this from our spineless politicians.

your not seeing past your objections.

I agree, and I think it's unlikely that he'll throw his hat in for some time. He's going to allow the candidates in both parties set the stage for him, rather than he doing any real work at all - he'll sit back and watch everyone attack one another and eat their own, only to step in as the "independent" savior to the two party system.

It's cute, and it would be pretty cunning had he not switched parties once in the past already, and then proceeded to say his rational for his initial switch was for winning the election only.

sure it looks less disingenuous had he not done it before, but lets face it, him calling himself a Republican all this time and in addition just to win an election in the begining was pretty smarmy as well.

i would argue this move is very cunning if you look at it in terms of the long view towards 2008 when the presumptive nominees have made themselves present. he's hoping to take a huge chunk out of the middle when that happens.

although, he can only be as effective if the the nominees are far enough left AND far enough right to make him look pragmatic enough to be taken seriously. so far it looks as if that may happen.

Billary is polling pretty strong right now though so....
