Building a desk [UPDATED]
could anybody recommend the best fixings, ie: screws/nails (i know, it's not a very good question, nor a very easy one to answer but i'm confused)
for all of the surfaces i will be using 18mm MDF, ie: top, base, sides, shelves.
a not very proportional example of how i am going to make it look is below. was going to sink the mixer etc but could prove a little difficult for me to do lol
cheers
ps: i just noticed i have typed printer on the lower shelf, which will actually be used for my keyboard so ignore that (will just be a sliding shelf, as will be the mouse shelf
anybody?
think i'm going to just use 3.9mm x 40mm wood screws with 8mm x 30mm dowels

U SHOW HER!
here's my question:
unless you are sinking the cd decks and mixer, if they sit on top of that surface, how will you reach your cds?

well here we go, have modified my original design. while still keeping the design simple. any suggestions?

are you using MSpaint for this? also the 2nd one looks a lot better and seems more like its more available for you to access things.

finally the guy foned back with a price for my desk... 220 GBP in standard MDF or 370 with the oak veneer - not sure if it's worth the extra 150 GBP so probly going to go with the cheapest option! just paint it black and maybe a piece of toughened glass to embed into the top surface area to add a bit of extra style
hehe

yea, i kinda thought i would need something kind of "specialist" ?
so i googled it and will probs buy:
http://www.ronseal.co.uk/products/product.jsp?id=7
cost about 10-20 GBP for the amount i need
no need to primer and dries pretty quickly compared to other products i looked at!

my plans keep changing so fucking much! i have now built my upper shelf which is going to be permanently detatched from the main desk lol...
i now need to by a couple more sheets of MDf to build the main desk while in the meantime i just use my current/soon to be old desk lol
getting there tho
Are you building the entire thing yourself, or is that workshop building it for you?
If you're building it I might suggest a few things, and forgive me if you've thought of them already...
Make sure you put a sturdy back panel on your desk. This will triangulate it perfectly and prevent it from parallelogramming over to the side. In my experience, wood screws can rip out of MDF fairly easily when exposed to certain stresses. Sheer is fine, and tension is okay, but when a joint gets tweaked out of 90* it all goes to pot. I recommend some strips of real wood (1"x1" or 2.5cm x 2.5cm) to go in the corners on the underside of your shelves. Screw THROUGH the MDF into this wood and you'll get a great bite.
For that top shelf, if you want to avoid the middle post, span the edge on the front and rear with some angle iron. That'll be enough to prevent bowing and give you more flexibility on what to place underneath it.
Good luck with your desk, and don't forget speaker stands!
thanks for the info mate. at this stage it's going to b me building the desk.
i have built my upper section used a sheet of mdf and attached it to 4 steel table legs. for now i just have to pieces of mdf near the middle of it which are supporting the centre - seems to be quite sturdy too
just the lower sections to build now
