Wintermute (Psy/techno/Industrial) PRIMER (Dark Ambient Psy/Goa)

Wintermute Mix
...aka
'My neighbours think I sell drugs'
mix

I got bored lately stuck inside because it's too cold to go outside for the last few weeks, so I started fiddling around with mixing again.
It's very bleak, cold and fast, lot of tracks missing I really wanted to throw in there and couldn't seem to get working, but I think it's got more or less the sound I wanted. Sort of a dark acid-techno/Industrial/Psy, heck for awhile I thought about dropping a few Terrorcore tracks on the end of it and they would have fitted in, but my ears where hurting enough... and probably dark and murderous enough to scare the average trance fan into crying as it is.

I gave up long ago sticking 'genres as a label' on my mixes and I gave up caring about sticking to one genre of electronic music.
It just is.

(24-7-07)
Runtime 70mins
160kb/s

CSI - Direct Dizko (Sander Van Doorn Remix)
Laibach - Tanz Mit (Crucified Remix)
Dogzilla - Dogzilla (Mistress Barbara Mix)
Icon of Coil - Transfer Complete (Pitch Black Mix)
VNV Nation - Strata
Hallucinogen - Synthesizzler
Xerox & Passenger - Science is God (Ultravoice Remix)
Hujaboy - Modifications
Xerox & Illumination - Battleship
GMS - Juice (Eskimo Remix)
Cybernetica - Twisted Ideal
Ministry - Burning Inside (Static X .Feat)

And special thanks to Cybernetica for dropping that bad ass new track here on TA so I could really wind this set up with a piledriver of a tune.

PRIMER
(14-8-07)
Runtime 1:15
160kb/s
85mb
Sendspace link

Juno Reactor - Hotaka
Dark Soho - The Fusion
Front Line Assembly - Plasticity (Haujobb Remix)
Cybernetica - Neuromancer
Juno Reactor - Rotorblade
Talamasca - Capricorn
Absolum vs GMS - The Therapy
Xerox & Illumination - Night Shift (remix)
Dark Nebula - Fire Offering
Psychotic Micro vs Exaile - La Putana
Cybernetica - The Promised Land

This was a very hard mix to do and I'm still undecided on how much I like it in terms of flow, it does have a very distinctive feel and sound to it though, which I like.
But find a nightmare to actually cobble together, especially with it being also comparatively long and it can be difficult to actually keep interesting to anyone listening without it turning into a blur of 147bpm hard sounding electronic drums, bass and freaky noises
Hotaka and Promised Land are two tracks I've wanted to use for quite some time though, completely different sounds though, one's a heavy, organic grind and the other's a harsh, electronic rollercoaster.

downloading this now Didn't know j00 was a DJ

Posted by Lilith on Jun-25-2007 05:37:

I'm certainly not a DJ! Just a prat with a mixer...

Posted by Sushipunk on Jun-27-2007 09:21:

I don't listen to that type (those types?) of music very often, but that was a wicked mix

Posted by cybernetica on Jun-27-2007 19:59:

Hey Lilith,
thanks for sending me that link, I really wanted to hear this.

Ok, track list looks pretty awesome. Opening with techno and some EDM/industrial, we move more into the trippy Psy area, conclusion with one of my favorite metal/industrial tracks by static X.
Thats what I love about your mixes, you dont stick to one single genre but let the mix evolve between several styles. The dark and cold atmosphere is the consistent element. It works very well, you have a good taste in music

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it
Though in retrospect I need to be a little more subtle with the filters in places.

I just about creamed in my pants when you led into Ministry Burning inside!!!

Posted by idoru on Jul-05-2007 06:29:

The simple fact that you referenced Neuromancer automatically warrants a download from me. This should be interesting.

Posted by Lilith on Jul-05-2007 06:58:

Hurray, someone knew the reference!
Hope you like it.

It's only my favorite book of all-time.

Will be giving this a listen tomorrow evening.

I need something to listen to this afternoon and wanted something different than what I'd usually grab.

Hoping this will fit the bill.

Thanks for hosting
I'll get around to a new set at some point in the next few days once I've ironed out what I want to do with it and chopped down the tracklist, it'll probably be a pure psy set. Which isn't unusual for here, but it'll be different for me.

Posted by Q5echo on Aug-07-2007 11:31:

holy crap this rocks!

clean as the driven snow.

for some reason the first half took me back to 1994/5

i lose patience with a lot psy sets lately but this one kept me in there.

Posted by Lilith on Aug-07-2007 21:11:

Glad you liked it Q
Yes, they can get overly repetitive and somewhat dull if you're not careful with the tracklists I've found in the past which is why I'm wary of putting together a 'completely' Psy or Goa set. Don't get me wrong it's a great part of trance but not always by itself, plus it does have the 90's feel to it because there was also a lot of decent acid techno around that time along with EBM/Industrial crossovers which influence each other. No genre is an island, they all nibble a bit off one another.

(I assume Robbie is hiding in his box fort in fear )

Lol - no, not in the least - the link was just dead after I replied, then it got re-upped, then I redownloaded it, and now I'll probably give it a listen some time either tonight or tomorrow afternoon.

I used to rather like a fair amount of trance, thought I don't know shit about Goa or Psy - but between you, Ian, Spacey Orange, Glassball, and J:\Digital I'm trying

Found it's well defined as a genre unto itself, you can usually have a fairly sure bet on what you'll get out of it. (Which has it's uses to a DJ)
Have fun looking at it though, it pays to have some diversity in your listening tastes

However, it's sometimes hard to make 'interesting'
As I found out trying to throw together a comparatively 'pure' set (posted above) and found myself getting bored very quickly even after mixing in a bit of really early Goa and acid.
So, I dug a bit deeper into the electronic/hybrid genre stuff, it has a feel too it, I'm not so sure about how well it flows for the first half and have very mixed feelings on how well it all works overall.
