Sidechain without the kick trick?

Does anybody know to sidechain without the kick being heard so the bass or pad etc that you are using is still effected but the kick doesnt play? I know you can automate the volume to dip in the right place but it just doesnt sound the same, it doesnt sounds as smooth doing it manually. I undertsand this may not be possible as without the kick passing through it wont in turn give the effect. The reason i'm asking Ive heard tracks with pads sidechained but no kick which sounds great in a breakdown. Cheers.

you need to set your channel to 'pre-fader send'

justin,

what are you using to sidechain, because if you were doing it with most of the sidechain compressors the kick that's being used SHOULD be muted. that's how the effect works, it comes in the signal process and effects the compressor on the current audio... so it's never heard.

there should be a setting on your compressor that says "key volume" or "input chain level" and make sure thats at zero

i dont know what plugins you're using, but all the ones i have used have an option to mute the output on the kick.

theres a plugin called sidekick it does the same as sidechain compression... do a google or it was posted on here loads of times so do a TA search....

personally i didnt like the plugin but others liked it!

give it a go.............

He's using reason unfortunately

I liek sidekick - would'nt use it for actual compression and i find it hard to get anything by a hard sidechain but if you team it up with something like the vanilla compressor or kjaeshus compressors then its a useful tool.

To achieve this. Duplicate the kick track but make sure it runs all the way through your tune. Use this as the signal. That way when you remove the actual kick thats heard in your breakdown. The duplicated track will still trigger the compressor to "pump" your synths as desired.

Good luck.
