James Holden @ Rex Club, Paris 2/17/2007 WTF!
I listened to this set yesterday and today, and I am so torn. I'm like many others who were ready to worship Holden after Balance 005. However, also like many others, I was disappointed at the direction he went after the release.
The first 28 minutes is great stuff, really hard and high paced. When I first heard this, I was beginning to think Holden was about to become my favorite dj again. However, at about the 31 minute mark the pace and the mix loses its wheels and goes to shit. After the diversion into a really strange place (especially given the very consistent and clear sound he was going for in the first half) the mix never seems to recover. The pacing is mediocre at best, and there really is no consistent atmosphere or mood he seems to be going for. Granted, good tracks are spotted about, but the total absence of mood and a consistent atmosphere left me scratching my head.
For those of you that have heard this mix, can you speak to these issues. I would be really interested to hear from those who still love Holden and what you think of this, or hopefully direct me toward better recent sets of his.

I would download it, but apparently I'm not good enough at reading wingdings or whatever the fuck this is:

now I have to wait to try again
first one was not 0GXC
that's what I put
I put Y for the 2nd one
OMG I WON!

I guess that makes that first one a 6. When the hell did they go to this nonsense?
Agreed, retarded. But anyways...
I was singularly unimpressed by Holden's technical skills when I saw him in 2005. There were train wrecks, and an out of time acapella that played for a full minute.
It was already posted in the Tracklists forum.

I am also confused about the thread title (gig in Paris) and the name of the file (gig at The End, London). I listened to the London set and I'm sure the correct tracklist was the one I posted.
Ah I see, its indeed the correct tracklist for the set @ The End
Saw him at Timewarp few months back and it was crazy. He closed down the party. Timeslot: 12h till 14h in the afternoon.
What a set, mimimal, some electro influences here and there and a lot of neo-trance. One of the best sets I heard since a long time
I actually thought the second part was better.
Still playing lump?

Hey guys, thanks for reviving the thread. I might be wrong, but I don't feel like Im in the minority of people who are like wtf is he doing. I hate to keep going back to this, but after Balance came out there was so much hype about him and the potential he had. To me, it seems like he hasn't even come close to living up to that potential. Sure, like someone pointed out he has produced a handful of really interesting tracks since then, but I have yet to hear a set from him in the past 2 years that I give repeat listens.
his set at sonar was better than balance 005

cool, Ill try to hunt that one down. Now when you say 'genuinely living up to his potential', would you agree that over the past couple of years he really hasn't (at least not consistently)?
When it comes to studio work - productions, remixes, mix compilations - Holden is the shit! But when he spins live, he is not that great.
It doesn't seem like dj'ing in a club is really his thing.
