-- I'm going to enter a dj contest:

I'm going to enter a dj contest:

Never span outside of my basement, well I did spin at a newyears thing, but it was very small, and nobody was there for music.

this contest is like 5 people who enter, every wednesday until september, get to spin for x amount of time, so i figure it wont hurt.

Just wondering if its intimidating your first time spinning? is it exciting? did you bomb? or did you kill?

I can kill my basement any time, but thats a lot different than in RL.

also its probably going to be house djs and 'mainstream' trance shit, gino beats. cause its toronto. i'm going to get booed 8)

lol gino beats

i actually didn't have much time as a pure 'bedroom' dj because i played with a partner at gigs not even having deejayed much at all when i started

but it was exciting as hell. first gig was one of the best times of my life. i'm sure it wasn't technically masterful, but i did something right with the set and it was pretty special

you should be excited. i've been performing musically since i was young and it's still in me, so it's a treat to play to a crowd. i don't even like to play by myself really, it seems pointless. deejaying for me is like speaking

dont get too gushy on us now

my first gig was a total fiasco, closing slot an outdoor party from 4-6

never work with idiots, especially when you are one yourself

Metro is your Top40 plus z103 gino crowd. GOOD LUCK

Haha, by "gino" I guess you mean an undesirable person of Mediterranean heritage, or what we call "muzza"?

That's funny, it seems like every nightclub in the world called "Metro" is full of these types. Must be something about the name.

When i read your first post I thought you were talking about the Club 246 Dj competition which happens every wed at some bar/lounge...
Never heard of anything happening on metro during the week except for fri and sat, whats the name of this competition?

oh maybe you're right. i was listening on saturday and thats where it was.

Be 100% sure that the DJ competition is geared toward electronic music and not scratch-happy hip-hop. Otherwise, it could be a discouraging experience.

Your first time in front of a crowd undoubtedly be nerve-wracking, so I recommend having a good stiff drink ahead of time to help keep your hands steady. Seriously. Other than that, just enjoy it.

first time playing out you'll definitely not have a perfect set, so don't miss lead yourself. I don't think anyone has ever first-time set they're happy with.

the difference between bedroom djing and club djing is pretty big. the hardest will be the first few mixes, after that you should be able to get the hang of it pretty quickly. so for your first tracks, do not choose tunes that are extremely short or you have trouble mixing in/out of.

Oh and make sure you have a few drinks in your stomach to calm the nerves. Being nervous is more likely to mess you up than anything else.

btw who's running this contest?

and if you're looking for more competitions to compete in Club246 is having one at Toi Bar right now as well. (www.club246.com - check the forums) Its a great venue + very friendly people.

Good luck.

Shitty thing about the 246 compeition is that you're being judged on the crowd pull too, so basically you have to get your freinds to come support you otherwise u'll be spinning to an empty dance floor...

Get 3-4 drinks in you... Have your 1st 3 tracks picked out. and Calm down 1 thing i struggled with my 1st time was "sound" Club Sound vs Bedroom sound its like comparing apples n oranges.

good luck!

yea, its hard to get good crowd pull on a wednesday night, but its still a huge part of the job of the dj, so its only fair to include it in the judging imo.

the more people you get in through the doors, the more money the lounge/club makes and the more financially beneficial it is for the owner to have you play. Plus if you don't pull a crowd and play to an empty room, you may as well play in the bedroom.

oh, and one more heads up: if you don't already mix in your headphones, learn to do so. I learned to mix open-ear (on ear open, the other covered by the headphones) and it causes trouble when there are crappy or no monitors available. best thing to do is practice mixing every possible way u can think of so you're prepared. I'm just now slowly getting used to in-headphone mixing... but its hard to shake habits.
