Why I can check my email, access this site and a few others, but cannot get on google, yahoo, or any other sites?

Are you in a work network? Sometimes networks have web software that block certain sites.

try pinging yahoo.com

seems like a security issue to me. I would try to ping www.yahoo.com from cmd first. Then check your browser security. I'm assuming you use crappy IE....so
