Burning Car In Airport Terminal
Updated: 16:32, Saturday June 30, 2007

A jeep has driven into the terminal building at Glasgow airport and caught fire, police have confirmed.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of loud "bangs" and saw at least two men - one of whom was on fire - emerge from the vehicle.

The sceneIt is thought a Cherokee 4x4 smashed into a glass door at the airport, the busiest in Scotland.

Witnesses said people removed gas cylinders from the jeep before it caught fire.

Police say it is too early to say whether the incident - which comes after failed car bomb attacks in London - was related to terrorism.

Police, fire crews and ambulances are at the scene.

Holidaymaker Stephen Clarkson said he knocked one of the men to the floor before police intervened.

He said: "There was an Asian male. He was lying on the floor and he was on fire, the Jeep was on fire as well.

Bomb scare prompts evacuation of Spain's Ibiza airport

Police have carried out a controlled explosion at the airport on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza, after the building was evacuated.
The airport was cleared after Basque newspaper Gara, often used for claims by separatist group Eta, said it had received an anonymous threat.

Spain has been on alert since Eta declared an end to a unilateral ceasefire on 5 June.

Ibiza attracts thousands of mainly European holidaymakers annually.

Gara said on its website that it had received a phone call warning of an "explosive device" at the airport.

The building was evacuated at about lunchtime and shortly afterwards a low-level explosion was heard.

Some 300 arrivals and departures were scheduled for Saturday, but the airport has been closed to outgoing and incoming flights, said the AENA airport authority, which controls Spain's airports.

Spanish authorities have been braced for a possible attack since Eta announced the end to what it had called a permanent ceasefire.

Despite the ceasefire, two people were killed in a bomb explosion at Madrid's Barajas airport in December.

It's just a lone gunman. There's clearly no larger agenda or ideology at work here. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

On a side note, isn't it funny how the media always refers to them as "Asian" now? As if there's anybody left on this planet who hasn't figured out what that really means. Pretty soon they'll need something even more politically correct: "Police describe the suspect as homo sapiens, male [it's always OK to point out that they're male], age 3 to 312.

Driver wrestled with police as vehicle burned, witnesses said

Jun 30, 2007 11:39 AM
Reuters

A four-wheel-drive vehicle rammed into the main terminal at Glasgow airport today and exploded in flames, Glasgow police and witnesses said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

A Glasgow police spokeswoman said the vehicle had not penetrated the building and the blaze was under control.

Britain has been on alert after two cars packed with petrol, gas and nails were found in London's teeming theatre district on Friday. Anti-terror police said the car bombs could have killed or maimed scores of people.

A witness in Glasgow told Sky News that an Asian man who had been inside the vehicle scuffled with police immediately after the incident, was wrestled to the ground and detained.

Another witness said a second man, also Asian, was on fire following the blaze and badly burnt. The flames were extinguished and he was also detained by police, the witness said.

Another witness told the BBC that the vehicle was a Land Rover and that there was a heavy stench of petrol after the car crashed. He said he did not believe the vehicle was a car bomb, saying that the explosion was relatively small.

"There was chaos at the airport," James Edgar, another witness, told Sky News. "I was in the airport building trying to book a holiday. Suddenly people were running past us. Suddenly everyone said to get out of the airport."

BAA, which manages the airport, was not immediately available to comment.

Glasgow airport handles around 8.5 million passengers a year, according to its website, and would have been packed with holidaymakers at the time of the incident, which took place at around 1520 (1420 GMT), according to Glasgow police.

I hope you're right, ideological/religious tension in Scotland is much higher than in England, and my immediate gut reaction was an islamic extremist... (esp with London car bombs on Thursday)

Why?
Terror thingy has been on front pages for yrs now.

I'm just waiting until something like this happens in Canada.
I don't want it to happen, but it'll be a wake up call for Canada finally.

My brother is living in Sheffield right now.. he's told me some crazy stories about the shit going on there. Apperently they have a huge problem with violence happening between different races and religions.. they're all bigots there.

Um, 3 separate incidences in Europe within 24 hours?

that's a wake up call we do not need. i think most canadians are aware of what's going on in the world and how serious it all really is.

You do know that Canada is a leading nation in Western world? Being part of NATO, leading troop contributor to Afghanistan and all that?

Plenty of reason for any whacko Islamic extremists to take a jab at Canada for.

While the numbers are high for a short period of time, I'm not surprised that these type of incidents are happening at all.

Hmmm... I think many Canadians are aware, but don't give much consideration because it's not as... personal to them as a threat at home would be, when they have to think about threats to their personal safety and their family.

Things happening far away in the other parts of the world, people don't care as much, because it does not personally affect them for most part.

+1
with US close, and amount of Canadians who travel to UK and Europe in general, I think we def have more then enough to worry about

Posted by oldschool420 on Jun-30-2007 17:57:

So am I missing something in these news articles, or has there been no confirmation of explosives even being in the Jeep?

I personally think that suspending all flights is ridiculous. The problem seems to have been contained and there is no need for mass panic.

These bomb discoveries aren't really a big surprise to me at all. I think it's great how good a job the authorities are doing to prevent big attacks with 0 casualties so far. Things like this are going to happen, but there is no need to halt air travel or go crazy. Let the authorities do their jobs, and you do yours.
