Oh NICE Steph! I thought Matt was the hottest female in the Kitchen Sessions but it looks like we're getting some competition.

nah, I'm practicing on a laptop right now. A friend should be bringing his decks over very soon when he gets the chance, so it'll be a whole new experience. But I'm getting this beat matching crap down while I have the chance. I am finding the hardest part is deciding which beat is in front of the other for me to decide which way to nudge. Please tell me that's supposed to be the hardest part.
A little bit of train wreckin' - but the ones I get right dead on and the mix is awesome, I can't help but do a little victory dance around the room. but something tells me victory dances aren't really awesome in a real dj booth. lol
and if anyone would like to bring their decks over and hook up to my speakers are welcome anytime, as long as I get to play on them

it was another 4 hour set today - way too much fun.

throw the computer in the trash if your using it for djing.

Yes deciding what beat is in front of each other is one of the hardest things to do so hear is a little tip.

You can never beat match 2 songs perfectly, so what you do is when you beat matching is just listen and see witch one is playing slower, then get it as close as you can but still keeping it slower. this way when they start to get off you already know witch one you need to speed up.

If you start on actuall turn tables dont even worry about the beat matching the first 2 hours. Just learn to drop the track and how to speed it up and slow it down using your fingers LIGHTLY. you have to be able to drop the track on 1 so practice that sweetie

i'm not using the computer for just djing. I am using it to learn a little bit on because I'm waaay too broke for my own cdj's right now. So this will have to do for now, ya know? The software looks just like a couple of cdj's and a mixer. I like it so far.

You are confusing me with this whole speed business. I adjust the bpm's to where both tracks match on the speed. So I would think there shouldn't be one song slower than the other. And here I thought I had the whole concept down - and now I'm confused again *thud*

You have the right idea. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

You shouldn't have to 'get it close' and make adjustments when you start transitioning the track. Tracks can normally be played 1-3 bpm's slower or faster than their normal rate without losing the original pitch (at least to a point where it's too obvious). You may have a track in mind that plays normally at 129 that you want to mix with a track currently playing at 133. First try to speed up the track that's playing at 129 to the current bpm rate of the track playing and see how it sounds. If it sounds like it ascended in pitch to much, slow it down and slow down the track currently playing one or two bpm's and only raise the bpm's of the track coming in. Generally, you can't really tell when a track has been slowed down by one (or two) bpm while being played. By doing this you keep the pitch integrity and are able to beat and key match more harmonically without losing anything. Que points are imortant too. But that is something you will just have to figure out as you gain more confidence and skill. I have heard way too many dj's start a track at a wrong point and the transition sounds like s**t, even though they had the bpm's matched and were able to key match too.

I concur. It helped me to count the bars. You'll noticed a layer or sound is added/removed usually every 16 bars. Learn the intro and outro of all your tracks. This will help you find the queue points. I also learned a lot by queing the intro track at different points until it felt right.

As for beatmatching, it helped me to visualize the two beats. I could see in my mind's eye where and how far/close the two beats are and adjusted.

Also, a transition should feel right and make sense.

My .02

Have Fun!!!

I would have said that, but I didn't think she would know what I was talking about if I said to pay attention to the measures. That's important, especially with progressive music structures

Steve if you took the bpm counters away, You would die.

LMAO!!!

Posted by Zild on Jul-02-2007 18:37:

Even if you use a beat counter to match the two songs they can still be off by +/- .8% but the good thing is you know if you're using a beatcounter and you match the tempos that you're automatically within +/- .8% so you don't have very far to go to get your songs matched up.
