FIFA U20 World Cup

Some good footy being played by the youngsters. So far almost a million tix sold

My reviews for day 1

Poland 1-0 Brazil

Yep. Upset.

Brazil couldn't get anything going to a well organized Polish side who despite a man down for 2/3 of the match hung on for the win.
Southampton keeper Biakowski had a great match being solid throughout the game.
Polish attackers did just enough to keep Brazil honest with counterattacks.
Tomas Cywka linked up with... ah crap. Forgot the other forward was but he held up the ball well and was very poised.

Alexandre Pato. Disappointing

South Korea 1-1 USA

Didn't catch 1st half but sounded like Korea was running rampant which continued in 2nd half. US only got some offence during set pieces with their height and strength being dangerous, but Korean keeper played very well.

Watching Korea was like watching Brazil play. Because of their smaller size, they use quickness and technical adeptness to create chances and throughballs and long balls were too much for US defence to handle at times and only US keeper and the crossbar prevented a Korean win.
Was very impressed with the play, the hustle of Koreans the most.

The entire Korean team needs a frigging haircut though. They all want to look like Liu Kang or something

Argentina 0-0 Czech Republic

Argentina had plenty of possession and chances but can't convert one. Czech Republic looked really lethargic.

North Korea 0-0 Panama

Watching the replay and I'm very surprised by the quality of play from North Korea. Not as flashy as their South Korean cousins, but I think even more individually technically gifted as I saw some really crisp throughballs and crosses. Very quick to launch on counterattack. Defence is a bit shaky though.
Only reason North Korea didn't win was Panama's 16 yr old keeper Mejio who made 5 world class saves. If he keeps this up, I think some clubs may be interested in this dude.

North Korea could be dark horse of this group, if they keep their defence tight.

A bit of a shit first day, very few goals. Nice upset for Brazil though, lol. USA-South Korea was the best game.

The FIFA website is broadcasting the entire tournament for free, with pretty good quality for an internet stream: http://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/livecoverage.html

Argies vs Mexico should be a cracker of a match. Best 2 teams left. I think Argies have a little edge though.

Chile and Spain both should be able to advance.

I think US will also go through simply because Austria's been running a lot on luck playing rather crappy teams.

Oh, today's match saw a Portuguese player get ejected from taking away the ref's red card. I lol'd

Semi-finals

Austria - Czech Republic
Chile - Argentina

I'm sensing a Chech Republic - Argentina in the final...

Both semis have potential to be upsets.

I don't think Austria is particularly a strong team, but they seem to do enough to get the job done, and Erwin Hoffer coming off the bench as late sub seems to work wonders for them.

Czechs haven't been playing particularly well either. Seems to lack a bit of finesse in their attacking game and no player really stands out to take the game to the opposition.

Chile might be a surprise too, as they have a very strong defence, but offence seems to rely too much on Alexis Sanchez to create. I think Argies will play similar tactics as they did against Mexico and put a clamp on Sanchez. Dunno. Could go either way.

I was right

Argentina 3-0 Chile
Austria 0-2 Czech Republic

Shame for Chile though, they finished the game with nine and, later, apparently, were arrested, dunno who...
